At the OP.

Do you know if there is rain expected, I did this "roadie mtb event" in the pouring rain once, it is indeed an entire different event if it rains the whole day.

HaHa, I remember in 2004 having to take my new Epic back to some Troll in Midrand to have the pads and sommer disks replaced after the grinding they took on the downhills.

That was indeed a rough year on that route :cursing: :cursing:

I did the1999 or 2000 on a set Continental Town & Country's, it was dry (it was actually very warm that day) and it was fine. A wet surface will be a different matter.

I do not quite understand Ms Cleats' reference to tubeless, is she saying no to tubeless?

Here's some more info supporting that http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rolling_resistance

Wel gedaan, goeie en getroue slaaf !

See that was not so difficult and now you have the full answer rather than the pseudo science sprouted by hubbers.

If you look even further, you will find research done specifically on bicycle tyres covering differences in width, pressure and road surface that answer your original question precisely.

I don't need the info, so I couldn't be bothered to go to the trouble, but as you do have the interest, I highly recommend it.

I would poep in my broek coming down Prince Alfreds Pass on slicks

I did it on slicks way back, if it is dry it is more than OK and I am not the worlds most skilled bike handler.

Not necessarily true.

If you reduce the weight of your tyres from really heavy at 900g to some lightweight thin sidewall tyres weighing less than 600g your saving in time for the same amount of energy used will be about 4 minutes on a 5 hour time. And that's just weight, not rolling resistance impact.

The problem is the sidewall cut that will take 30 minutes to fix and then limp home at snails pace

Except this particular race is the Argus on gravel roads. Likelihood of tearing a sidewall given correct tyre pressure is about the same as me cracking a sub 4 and being rewarded in Knysna with a happy ending.
