But when you get in your car to do anything other than go to work you are in essence using the road 'recreationally' as well. If we apply the same principle, than why should we as cyclists not make a similar fuss out of that??? Should we petition the good Zoologist Doc to only walk when he goes to the grocery??

Interesting argument that I never thought of before.

Yes, no more holidays driving around the countryside, no more trips to the beach, the bowls lawn, the rugby test, the movies, your local pub.........interesting :) Unless you allow us to cycle for fun!

Heard about this from someone riding in the group and from what I heard, it was a completely different story, with his braking being "very intentional after a prior altercation on the road with the driver" - charge should have been laid against the driver

That Kalk Bay stretch is such a joke. Had an altercation with some freak driving a Jeep Cherokee there 3 weeks ago, where he deliberately moved left towards the pavement, squeezing and almost taking out my significant other. There's no reasoning with that type and I highly doubt they ever check themselves regarding this behaviour, let alone feel any remorse.

As always three sides to the story - driver's one was in the paper.

Undisputed fact is that he has a broken back window and the rock that broke it, I battle to see this being a reasonable action if it was the response from the cyclists. Definitely doesn't mend any bridges!

From my original long post: "Conclusion: Accept the reality of road-sharer conflict and move to the mountains. This is not about surrendering in the war, but about setting aside your carbon egos and making a decision which favours the survival of our bicycling species. MTBers are generally less feeble anyway (IMHO)."

I do both, as do many other cyclists who visit here. Somedays I prefer the road flavour. I just bend that way. That the mountain option exists does not take away from the fact that the roads need to become safer! To suggest mountain time as the workaround is like putting your head in the ground waiting for the danger to pass...

While you're sizing your sub 9kg carbon bike up against the trucks, I'll be enjoying the calm and peaceful Tokai forest tomorrow afternoon. It really is just unfortunate that our roads (and people) are not bike-conscious enough. I'm merely advocating one safe way around the issue at hand, not saying it is THE solution.

I'll be riding the Niner SS if anyone feels like they need to come give me a klap or make friends. I'm always keen for the latter. :)

Edit: Riding on the mountain could also been seen as taking cover underground while we think up a way of winning the war.

I know most of that crew. They like to shoot their mouths off but deep down are some solid chaps in real life. They have been klapping each other and anyone else they can take the mickey at for years on e-skirt before moto101 came about.... It's a forum frequented by motorcyclists with the largest base coming from off road, enduro and motocross enthusiasts. Most of the members actually do some form of cycling to get fitter for the racing they do, whilst the social only riding crew bash them into touch!
