It's been awhile, so we thought we'd come back with a splash:

This is the unique and compelling story of one man taking on the mountains, an athlete’s battle against addiction, set against the dramatic background of the Alps during the Tour de France. The Accidental Death of a Cyclist is the tragic tale of Marco Pantani versus himself.

In 1998 Marco Pantani, the most flamboyant and popular cyclist of his era, won both the Tour de France and Giro d’Italia. This titanic feat of physical and mental endurance has never since been matched. Pantani was a hero to millions and was seen as the savior of cycling during a time when doping scandals threatened to destroy the sport. But 6 years after this extraordinary feat and aged only 34, tragically, Pantani was dead. Discovered in a cheap Italian hotel, he died alone from acute cocaine poisoning.

The Accidental Death of a Cyclist explores the true story behind this remarkable man’s achievements and his tragic fall.

Pity this is not coming to Durban, what with all the AmaShova fever on the go here at the moment.  I am sure Suncoast could arrange a mass screening over the weekend.

  2. @BarryMcCallum @ReubenVN the screening rights for this film are very pricey. But will keep you posted. Thanks for the support!

Surely there's A LOT more money in Johannesbog than in CT?

It not all about money hey bru .... :)

Seriously can't wait - still remember Phil Leggat's commentary while he was going up Alpe du Heuz -  "he is dancing on those pedals like only Pantani can"

If only it weren't ...

Saw a documentary on CNN on Sunday about Denmark. The happiest country in the world - and you know why? They aren't fussed about money and material possessions, preferring to focus on relationships. They pay tax at 56%, and smile. Also, more people cycle to work than drive to work.

I am big a fan of his, but cannot understand how he can be treated as such a hero and LA such a disgrace.

They both did the same thing. LA was stripped of his titles, however, Pantani, Riis, Ulrich all kept theirs.

Something is wrong with the whole system.

the big difference is lance was a d005. if you act like a d005 for a long time eventually the worm turns and karma eats your ass.

I think his treatment of 'il Elafantino' probably played a role in his downfall. and that ended fatally.

What does it matter, last time I checked being a **** wasn't a UCI or criminal offence. The average man on the street probably doesn't even know who Pantani and Riis are but LA is the scapegoat of doping in sport (not just cycling).

ha how does dying of an overdose count as "accidental"?

And I agree, he houldnt be celebrated if lance get treated the way he does. anyone who's watched THAT alp d huez record should be able to see he was doped to the gills! Yet he's a hero. That's a tad unfair.
