So what is the seller going to do about the situation?

Have you taken the bike to an lbs to make sure everything is set up properly and it's not user error, or are you 100% sure you know what you are doing in this instance?

Reason why I ask is I have had a few cursing sessions myself in the past only to find out I was doing it all wrong, can be some quite tricky bits on bikes especially on the shifting side of things, googling the problem or asking on thehub normally sets things straight though.

Hi Skylark,

I believe that I know what I am doing as this is not my first charity bike that I built.. However.. I did take it into my LBS to check it out as I was starting to think I screwed up on this one. I also took it into another bike shop just to get a second opinion aswell..

He told me friendly that nothing would be done about this...

What is exactly wrong with the components?? I'm still not getting the real story.

Not sure what he's actually saying?

Yup, that's pretty much a "jammer om te hoor". Really not the best response, please rate his Hub name so we all know in future.

That's what I would like to hear, are the parts worn out, cracked, bent/buckled?

I also had a bad experience as a result of a hubbers dishonesty and my own stupidity.

I bought a Giant Anthem about 3 months ago. This was my first MTB and I did not know anything about bikes. I asked the following questions and got these answers:

Me: How old is the bike?

Seller: Ive had it for about two years and the guy before me for about a year.

The truth: The bike turned out to be a 2007 model!

Me: Are the shocks and components fine and have they been serviced?

Seller: Bike was serviced at the beginning of the year and everything was checked.

The Truth: The rear shock leaks air and the front leaks oil. Brakes were a mis-matched pair and had to be replaced. The rear free wheel body was completely shot, plus the hubs were no-name 24 hole hubs with no replacement components available. Thus a new wheel set had to be bought. The shifters are quite stiff and will probably have to be replaced.

I've fixed most of the problems and its probably too late to complain now. But I'm still considering emailing the guy to give him piece of my mind.

Do I have any other options?

This sounds like a small anthem I wanted to buy from a family in the southern suburbs in Cape Town. I outlined all these faults to the guy and walked away from the deal, two days later I saw it on Gumtree for a lower price. Pm me if this sounds familiar, as you then have recourse through the CPU, as they knew about all the faults.

I get that you should know, but in reality nobody knows everything. And sometimes you don't know if something is not working until putting it on your bike.

For me the (utopian) Hub should be a community where you don't get sellers advertising falsely, e.g. derailleur doesn't work, but not stating it. That's for the Gumtrees, etc. And that's why I like comments in the classifieds for people that don't know.

Nope , the hub is all but an Utopia.

The same guy that sells his scam on Gumtree sells it here. Dishonest people are everywhere, even in your local cycling club.

But that is why we should be vigilant here and call people out. If this practise becomes the norm, then chancers will be less likely to want to attempt to push their dressed up junk here!

Z, as other posters have said, what exactly is wrong with the kit if they look new enough to complete the sale but there's a functional issue with them now? Add the detail, so that we can fully understand please.

It is sad that people are not honest with themselves. Rather be honest than rob people.

I will never buy stuff from other province, unless I know someone who can check it for me.

Also I prefer to meet seller at their house because I know what type of person and he can't run away, if I come back with problems....

Sometimes you can't blame the seller, if you find problems because he does not recognise the problems.  For me, rather go back and discuss whether give the money back or pay half for repairs....

Last month I bought the car from the woman and the car was good condition. I checked everything and I bought it from her. I took it for roadworthy and it failed because all 4 tyres were badly worn on inside, even though they looked like new. I went back to her and she agreed to pay half for 4 new tyres. That is how good person she is.... We can't always be perfect...

I've never had a problem buying on the hub, and most of the time what I receive is in a better than advertised condition.
Collecting from the dudes house or sending it from the other side of the country it's all the same.
