Road Racing wheels - what to get without breaking the bank?

I am starting to look around and keep my eyes open for a new set of all round, do it all road wheels.

I cant justify the costs for a set of training wheels as well as racing wheels so need to combine them together in a decent package.

Preferably clinchers but not completely apposed to tubbies...

Budget R5000 give or take...

- I have seen these in the classifieds and the reviews I read are fairly decent - any comments or experience?  https://www.bikehub.co.za/classifieds/108181-bontragerhed-aeolus-wheelset-tubbies/

- Also seen a set of Easton EC90 as well as Easton EA90

- Also looked at Mavic Ksyirium Elite S as well Mavic Cosmic Elite.

There seems to be so many options that I am in no way close to making a decision, so any help, advice, suggestions will be greatly appreciated...

Edit: Title change

I can build you a decent set from R4500 up depending on components.  Rims Mavic CXP 33, Velocity Fusion or similar.  Revolution spokes and good hubs (hub prices are the big variant).

If you go for a finished wheelset my advice is keep away from, avoid and do not buy a set with proprietary or patented spokes, nipples or hole drillings.

Thanks guys for the suggestions so far... Keep them coming.

Trying to make a short list that I will then decide from off there

Currently have the standard Bontragers that came on my Trek... Not sure the exact model

Why not use them as training wheels and just get a more race ready wheelset?

Good advice.!

Boutique style wheels look great, but spares can be a headache.

It does sound like the Bonty's will be good for training ...

I agree with this.

R5,000 isn't really enough to buy a wheelset that is MUCH better than what you have. Save up a bit and buy some wheels that will make a real difference and keep them for special rides and races. Put some high mileage tyres on the Bonts and some racy light grippy tyres on the new set.

Nothing like putting on the race wheels to get amped for a race!
