Dreadful news - RIP fellow rider and condolences to the family.

I'm sorry, but I just have to say this. With R15M+ in a trust fund, can't the PPA do more than a few 1.5m bumper stickers? Ditto the CSA to be frank.

Maybe this the wrong thread or time/tone to debate that point though.

If that is correct then we as PPA members should really use our voices and get them to be more proactive. If no responce then we should perhaps cancel our membership. M2C WORTH.

I don't believe that any organisation will be able to change anything. Driver's attitudes need to change. People need to slow down and focus on driving; not on their cell phones or their passenger.

If 15000 people in South Africa died of a disease, it would be an epidemic, if 15000 people died in a terrorist attack we'd wage war, but because the 15000 only die on our roads we look the other way.

It's a sad time indeed.

RIP fellow cyclist

My condolences to the family left behind!

What I can't understand is how people can just drive away, have we degenerated as a society to such a point where people have no conscience and can just ignore what they do? Are pedestrians and cyclists no more that an unfortunate bird that was struck by a car? People used to stop I am sure. Are there any consequences for hit and runs? Is it because it has to be proved beyond reasonable doubt that the person did it? Taxi driver willfully put peoples lives in danger to bypass cars waiting at a railway crossing, smack into a train while booms are down, get reduced sentence.

I don't know, makes me sick. We have no more respect for each other (obviously a generalization).

South Africa and every where around the world, we have lost the value of life.

We read it everyday on the news and papers, killed for R2 or whatever...

Sickening indeed. What's make it worse in SA, is that you can almost get away scott free, just blame the drugs or alcohol that got into your system. Phuck ekse!

Condolences to the family. Any hubbers know the guy or family, I'm willing to spot for some flowers or something!

It's very true and apt to talk about road death stats in general - we tend to think it's just us as cyclists, but the truth is that too many are happening with taxs, cars, buses etc due to bad or careless driving

This will not change until the punishment fits the crime & death penalty comes back too mind you.Too easy to get off and carry one.

:offtopic: what if a local clothing(cycle gear) company makes cycling shirts with a design/print that says that we are GATVOL. USE THE PROCEEDS FOR AND ACCOUNT TO PAY FOR LEGAL FEES IN SUING THE BASTARDS. Just a thought.

I'm with Meezo.  If there is anything we can do as 'TheHub' for the family I'm in.

Just think about our own families.  We go out for an evening ride and don't come back.  Devastating :(

Nooooo!!!!

Big road

Good viz

Broad shoulders with yellow line

Ride In Peace, Fellow Rider!!

Unfortunately the road can be 10 times bigger... and we still get knocked down... I'm so sad to see a fellow rider die... RIP our friend !!! I hope justice will take its course whatever happened.

Anybody got news on that guy that got killed in PE (think it was last year) he was intoxicated and fled the scene... never heart the outcome... anybody knows?

RIP fellow rider! The carnage must stop. I propose that all PPA members send an e-mail to the PPA requesting an action plan from them and not the standard press release. Magtig, so kan dit nie aangaan nie - my hart bloei vir die vrou, kinders en familie.

:w00t:  :w00t: :w00t: Maybe thats what we need, a SLIMY dude to tackle the BASTARDS..

And he is extremely good at what he does, taking on the RAF for people that can't afford to. Sure he takes a large chunk, but pays for all associated costs including medical assessments on the victim's behalf until settlement, which can take up to 5 years to settle the claim.

These sad stories are just far too common...Condolences to the family.

Maybe we do need to set-up some sort of campaign here, or work alongside an existing fund. I'm sure between us on the Hub we have the necessary resources to make an impact on this. I'm sure there are those involved in existing campaigns, own companies and have the funds to drive this properly. Maybe this needs its own thread...

Very sad news RIP fellow rider, I ride that route almost daily.

The issue is that there is no accountability for ones actions. Just a fine or slap on the wrist to those who do wrong.

On Sunday evening on the corner of Long and Whale street a guy raced through a red light hitting my friends car and writing it off. Thankfully she walked away unscathed just very sore and bruised.

When I got there I could clearly see and smell that the driver had been drinking, his passenger was stumbling and slurring all over the place. When I asked the officer if he was going to give the driver a sobriety test he said no.

His reasoning, no police or traffic official witnessed the accident and no one was injured.

Insurance will pay out, the driver will have another car and the vicious cycle begins again.

Sad news but unfortunately this rider's death will be lost in the stats with the 1000s of others that die on our roads each year.

If we want safety on our roads we need simple laws to be introduced and enforced. Rules like stricter licensing tests, demerit points for speeding, running red lights/stop signs, dangerous driving, illegal overtaking, etc. And then mandatory jail time for drink driving or driving without a licence.

Its not rocket science, just copy the road rules we are missing from any country in the world and enforce them here and we will have better safety on our roads for cyclists and motorists.
