So - in case anyone is interested - about 10 small spots cold burned off, and 1 of the 2 bits I was worried about taken out with a scalpel (and a biggish chunk of surrounding skin) - and sent off to the lab - the other one he was not concerned about...So mostly good news - have to wait and see on the lab results - take a few days.

Who do you see ?

Had 2 x melanoma's removed from upper body so I am very paranoid about this. melanoma killed 2 x varsity mates of mine in a short space of time. Bothe were redheaded, fair skinned guys who spent a lot of time in the sun.

Last melanoma was a lucky catch but I knew what to look for.

There is a brilliant video on YouTube somewhere about Skin Cancer, Melanoma and the damage done to the skin through one bad burn.

I think it's called "Message to my 16 year old self". Google it and watch it. Basically it is from guys who died or are dying of skin cancer, wishing they could go back in time and message their younger selves to to wear sunscreen or to stay out of the sun. Scary to watch.

That and the immortal "Wear Sunscreen" song by Basil whatchamacallit.

Baz Luhrmann was the guy who sang that

The easiest way to recognize another Saffa at the airport is to look for the white people with most damaged skin .I see these people on a daily basis ,presenting with skin cancer at age 45 +.In Australia  children are not allowed on some beaches without sun protection full costumes and hats

I have just diagnosed a melanoma in a 28 year old women, everyone needs to be aware of what's growing on their skin regardless of age.

I'll post some pics of my arm a bit later. Melanoma's are serious stuff. A small little mole like thing and if you dont catch it early enough you land up with having your closest lymph node removed, and your battle will always battle to drain fluids from that part.

I am very Blond with the skin to go with it, so a lifetime of cycling, and working in the African sun has taken its toll.

Nowadays I cover up, on the bike and at work I usually wear long sleeves, and under my cycling helmet and hard hat at work I wear a cap from first ascent.

At home if I work outside or on the roof I wear the sirocco cap.

When swimming etc. I first apply Factor 50+ sunblock

My skin has been battered by the sun and the Dermatologists treatments every six months but daily application of Baobab oil improves it no end. (available here http://www.ecoproducts.co.za/)
