Please tell me more about your “kit strategy”. I know it’s weather dependent on the day but what is your planning? I’ve heard that you need to put your winter kit in your Bergplaas box (probably your lights too). Do you also change to dry kit at Bergplaas?

I saw that the start last year looked cold and most people started riding with some winter gear. Is that the normal kind of weather for this part of the year?

From past experience the start is always cold, but keep in mind that it feel worse because you will be standing around at the start for probable at least 30 minutes. Once you get going, and especially once you've turned left on the big road and start climbing, you will be way to warm with your winter kit on.  I've always done the baselayer vest, cycle shirt, gillet, and arm warmers, long finger gloves is probably up for personal reference.

Light at checkpoint 3, or at least some sort of back up light, as you do not know what will happen in the race, and you can end up riding in the dark up Bergplaas.

I've always had a full kit for the top of Bergplaas, but most of the times you end up putting on legwarmers, and maybe a long sleeve jacket, but from there is is so quick to your support team, if you have, that you might end up not making use of putting on a fresh clothes, but that is personal preference.  Dry sock might always be a good idea here, as your feet might get wet, especially after the long water crossing after CP3.

The times that we have ridden we get our winter kit at Bergplaas. The first year I rode I fell into the water and by the time I got to Bergplaas was frozen. Generally, from all the sweat, we like to get into dry clothing at Bergplaas. Our main lights are also there, but we ride with our headlights just in case we get there a little late. In 2013 we had rain and last year was clear but the evenings do tend to get cold. Also, the downhill from Bergplaas factors in windchill. (We tend to get to Bergplaas just as the sun is setting and it gets cold quickly)

Weather forecast so far for this year looks good, I reckon it will be about 10-12 degrees at the start and it warms up to 23/24 with a slight wind at the back, partly cloudy/clear.

You should be able to start with summer kit, we always have our wind/rain jacket with us so you can put that on and maybe arm warmers.

We like to do a kit change at Bergplaas plus dress warmer. Boost for the morale for us as well as you have done most of your climbing and it is nice to start 'afresh'. We also send some wetwipes in the crate for a quick wipedown.

Lights go to CP 3, we are middle to back of the pack racers and have not made it to Bergplaas in the light.

All depends on how fast you ride.

A safe bet is kit and lights on top of Bergplaas (with maybe a small light at the checkpoint before - just in case you have one of THOSE rides).

The danger with putting on all your winter kit on the top of Bergplaas is that once you get going - and especially if you manage to get going before dark, it gets rather warm again once you hit the valley floor again.

If you're really fast, and you're feeling good, I'd make Bergplaas a quick stop and try to push on to Kondomo (or whatever it's called these days) for lights and kit.

I wouldn't dress too warmly at the start - it usually gets rather warm once we get going, as the Kloof warms up. After all - we are in Africa, and this is mountain biking - HTFU ;)

Don't worry - quite a normal feeling. This is how I feel every year:

Hope my teammates have been practising their pushing techniques!

What kind of time would you be aiming for as a "Midpack" racer?

Also, can someone give us an idea of your different checkpoint times in relation to your finishing time?

Edit: Or at least your Bergplaas time vs your finishing time. Just to get an idea.

There is a split time calculator on the web site, in the boxes on the right.
