ok so i havent read everything here, mr copperhead seams really annoyed that im slating evobikes...

only im not

i emailed them, they replied about the play giving me 2 options, take it to my LBS or give it back to them

to i took it to my lbs and had the bearings replaced, evobikes even sent me one of the bearings because its a funny size.

not ONCE did i say that evobikes is retarded, the service i got from them was a testament to their reputation.

novatec also seems to have a pretty good reputation, i also didnt say never buy a novatec, because of this rep, i did however say that you get what you pay for.

everyone telling me how this could have been avoided and that its my fault is also missing the point, im not even denying that its not my fault! im saying that this happened in 6 months, damage like this should take a lot longer!

oh any from now on in this thread im just going to make analogies.

Yes I've snapped an axle ONCE.

That's not that point either

Oh, thought it had been twice - my bad.

But no, that's not the point.

Point is it was giving jip (movement) a few weeks after purchase, and EVO recommended a return for warranty purposes. Which didn't happen as he wanted to ride. Bearings were replaced, and then 3 weeks ago the noise started...

Originally - manufacturer fault? Tolerance out a little maybe... a solution was given and declined.

Now - school fees.

You (twice) hairy and one other person

But yes, axle. Not hub. But then Mada isn't a small guy either. Taller than us, but not as hefty.

83kg @ 1.93m ;)

sorry, didnt make that one clear, axle of the hub snapped, and that was when there was a giant bolt through going through there!

snapped where the freebody meets the chassis/body

ok lets say im retarded and i have like... copper for brain or something ;)

that hub should still last a lot longer than 6 months! even in the hands of a leadhead!

whatever happened to hub threads getting all techie about why a thing failed, as opposed to dreaming up fictitious slants on local retailers, and then going on about it as if its the fact of the matter. Getting emotional about non-existent crap is what's taken this thread way off topic. That's properly annoying.

ok, so.

you go to the shop to buy milk... you choose the carton with the use by date an entire week away

you go home and find out that the milk is already off

so if you take the milk back the shop will refund you.

but you keep using the milk...

^^ i made that line to indicate the end of my analogy.

now i shall explain it.

its not my fault the milk is off, its my fault i keep using it.

the milk should not be off, i should not have to take it back!

i have every right to be annoyed at the cow who made the milk or the dude who lied about the use by date.

You shouldn't be drinking milk.........

i agree if its off, but why if its not?

what else do you put in futurelife?

You might (or might not) be lactose intolerant, but that is not the issue here.

More importantly there are quite likely hormones (RT Fishall ones) in your milk which could lead to you developing a squeaky voice (not unlike a well-known gunman now incarcerated). You could also test positive at your next race.. jus' sayin'..

What is "Futurelife"? Sounds like sitcom?

I don't understand why the bearings needed to be replaced after 1 month? If that was me I would have been taking the entire unit back to the place I bought it from for a replacement...or am I missing something?

buying online makes taking it back a little complicated.

not at all impossible though.

like i said before, this isint completely novatec's fault, they have a well deserved good reputation, that being said, it should not break in the first 6 months.

about the leadhead joke copperhead, sorry boet, didnt mean it personally, although at the time i did think it would work its way in really well ;)

i had the bearing replaced within a month because of the play it developed, i did this under the advisement from evobikes. it did NOT fix the play, but i dont blame evo for that, it was the most logical thing to do and the correct advice, after i told him that it didnt work he said bring it in, which is when i promptly went riding...

FWIW I burned through a novatec hub in 6 months. Got replaced under warranty with apparently a new pawl design. Running fine now since July.

The answer is on page 1 of the thread - play in the bearing leads to end cap wobble and ultimately it touches the hub.

Could also be an incorrect bearing width installed, but most likely it's just the bearing failing.

Let me try as well.

Novatec are a hub manufacturer and they make entry level to upper level hubs.

This happens to be an entry level hub.

Now lets talk about bearings, I read a while back where some freaks suggested they need a proper greasing.

No , the balls wear, the races wear and when this happens you have what we call play, take a hub like this where the cups pus on and get held in to place and you end up with what is already a relatively poor design to begin with.

The cups are now putting load on the bearings dependent on how tight the skewer is .

This and the fact that bearings do wear just amplifies the play.

Bearings are also like light bulbs, they last a week or a year, it all depends on how well we treat them, how many miles we put in to them and how well the hub is designed in terms of tolerances .

Not even to mention that sealed cartridge bearings ,especially the sizes we use for bicycles are a poor design to start with in the first place.

Then we get this hub, so the bearing goes, nothing new, a new one gets installed and it goes too.

The OP feel he is owed a new hub, others say they would have taken it back and demanded a new hub.

No problem, we will supply a new hub, but charge you for a re-build and depending if you decide to upgrade your hub, you will might need new spokes too.

In the end of the day, the OP bought an entry-level hub, bearings do wear and that us to be expected.

In the future invest in a better hub, and get one built to stricter tolerances and one that preferably has preload nuts on the axle for the bearings .

ja but wyatt...even my first full sus - an entry level mongoose i bought a million years ago - with entry level hubs..I only had to replace the bearings after thousands of kilometres...i can understand how they can only last 4 weeks...my current dt's have been going for now about 8000km with no problems (ok they are not entry level and sealed...but still...)
