Most diesel engines last a lot longer than 100 000km' date=' especially modern models.

Take a look at the VW Passat TDI 1.9, service intervals are every 12000-15000km. Plus it still gets approx 19km to a litre.

well, you are the first person I meet claiming that - everyone else says they last much much longer than petrol engines. much much longer

I have a golf 3, 1997, 1.9 tdi  with 290.000 km's on it, no probs at all so far.

my brother has a golf 4 1.9 tdi, 2001, with 310.000 km, no probs fo far.

we just sold our audi a 4 2.5 tdi, 1999, with 300.000 km - no probs at all.

diesel just go and go and go. (is it because of the lower rpm's?)

I have a motorplan' date=' and a friend who is high up in the motor industry told me "use your motorplan. If your car squeaks, send it in"

Advice I have used, and its saved me in the past.

I was thinking of getting an old 2.4diesel Toyota Hilux from the early '90's! Apparently they run forever? Or do I believe everything I'm told?![/quote']

What happened to the old Mercedes Benz C200D' date=' those suckers used to run forever! Without a Turbo too!

[/quote']

exactly!

from hear-say and ifno's from ppl that have knowledge in the field i'd also say: buy an "old" diesel and you are fine. my golf 3 tdi will surely take me around for another 10000000000 or so km's

I think danger dassie confused something he picked up somewhere

They can and they do. So does most diesels. Even turbodiesels. When you drive them like diesels, that is. And you service them religiously. I have no experience with modern diesels, but have driven plenty of turbodiesel 4x4s over the years. Fit an ETG and you'll be fine. When you start cracking heads and blowing turbos, you are in for some serious expenses. I am VERY hestitant when it comes to buying a turbodiesel outside of warranty.

N/A diesels like the current cruiser pickup's 4.2D go on forever. But they are heavy on juice and slow. Not ideal when you are staring at R10/l.

What I dont understand is how people manage to survive these days.

I mean' date=' to buy a house you have to be making an absolute fortune. And I'm talking 'entry level'...which is what? +-R500k? So the average person has to be making R20k pm + to afford a house?? Am I right?

[/quote']

You think that's bad? In Stellenbosch houses start at R2.5m.... you can't buy a sh*thouse for under 1m.

Yip, my mistake yet again!! R500k does not get you much, but I was refering to really really basic housing. Thats surely in the half bar region?

As for diesels, this time last year I bought a 2year old Land Rover Discovery, the Tdi whatever it was. What a load of rubbish. It broke down on the way from the traffic depot to the dealership! Was a waste of time.

But I have heard fantastic things about the Toyota's.

Was considering the new C-class CDi, but decided against it. Looks now like I may have made a wise(ish) choice.

I've got the BMW mag on my desk and they did a test with the 318d. They drove from Copenhagen to Londo on a tank of diesel. That is 1300km and still had enough for another 150km. that is on a 61l tank. I must ad that I do not they they used their indicators. We all know that uses alot of juice.

But I think I'll rahter pay double for petrol then drive a BMW.
