Had an awesome 4 days riding and racing at Cascades in PMB this past weekend.
So many amazing trails to ride.
Got asked by Beanie to lead her into Jugs Road gap, about 10m double on the World Cup DH track, at 15 years old I think she's the first SA lady to hit the jump (to my knowledge).

While i'm recovering I though I would share some common mistakes I have noticed.

Week 1 we have.

Hold Your Bars....
This may seem like common knowledge to most people but I have had several students who didn't even know they were doing it.
If you ever feel like you have a weak grip or lack control just check where your thumbs are positioned.

One Finger Braking & Hold the end of your bars.

All brakes these days should be strong enough to only have to use one finger, if they are not, rather increase your rotor size (ie 160 - 180mm) instead of using two fingers.
This will give you much better grip on the bars and better control of your braking.

Hold the end of your bars,
Having your bars stick past the outside of your hand is the best way to catch them on things, if you are not using the full width then rather cut the ends off.

Flat Pedal Foot Position.
It might not seem like something important but it has a huge effect on your riding and control of the bike.

Correct position
- Ball of your foot is positioned slightly in front of the axle of the pedal.

Position pros
- Stable footing, less chance of slipping off.
- Active calf, keeps your full range of motion in your heal and calf muscle which is hugely important in working the bike and riding smooth, this also helps keep contact with the pedal.

Why flats
- They help you push your limits and try new things because you know you can put your foot down easier.
- You learn the correct techniques for a lot of skills (bunny hop, jumping, drops)
- Flat pedals force you to pedal properly, which then translates to proper pedal and bike handling techniques when clipped in.

I feel all riders should ride with flats every now and then to improve their general bike skills.
