DH Rims

So I'm reaching the end of life of my ENVE rims on my DH bike. They've got a little life left but they'll be transferred across to my Tracer and hopefully live out the rest of their lives in relative comfort.

But what to replace them with?

Right now it's a choice between Flow EX's and Mavic EX823's. I know the Mavic's are heavy but they are strong. On my old 823's I've gotten many flats at Tokai and just ridden down the road to my car no worries.

Any other rims I should be looking at? I'll be lacing them to Chris King hubs.

NOT SPANK!! Margarine is a terrible material for bicycle rims.

there are Spanks and there are Spanks.

I have Spike Race 28's and Spike 35's. I wouldn't hesitate to run either again on a DH bike.

But I ave heard that some of the other models are a bit on the soft side.

Yeah, the earlier stuff was like butter. My subrosas are holding up well, as are Deon's. They've definitely come a long way from what they were.

But - if it were my money, it'd be Flows.

I ran Spank Spike 35's for nearly 2 years, plenty strong. Could not break them.

Currently running Dartmoor Raiders. Plenty strong as well

What is the Spikes roughly going for now, and do the numbers '28' and '35' refer to the holes?

Nope, the numbers refer to the external rim width.

the Spike 35mm is heavier and more of a burly freeride rim

The Spike Race 28mm is as the name suggests. A DH race rim. It's quite a popular rim on the WC circuit.

I paid about R800 per hoop for the Spank Spike 35 back in 2011

Below is the links of chain reaction cycles

The numbers do not refer to the holes( would love to see how you lace up a 35 spoke hub  ). As far as I know, with my limited knowledge, it is just the model number

NO SPANK!!

There are 2 brands I won't go near. One is Crap Brothers and the other is Spank.

Anyways the decision has been made. Mavic EX 823's The funny little nipple configuration (Sure I've heard that line in a movie before) and rim strength allow one to run a higher than normal spoke tension which will supposedly make the wheels nice and stiff.

Why not another set of ENVE? :D

I only paid R6500 for the Chris King/ENVE wheelset. I doubt I'd be able to repeat that deal.

I'm going for WTB Frequency i-25's. Light, wide, strong and good value for money.

Just placed the order this morning with CRC

Shouldn't have done that. I've been waiting for 3 weeks for my stuff to arrive.

It's stuck at the bloody mail centre at the airport because of the strike

Flows can run tensions just as high as Mavic, and you don't have to deal with funny nipple holders. They're also slightly wider, which gives your tyres a bit more stability.

But they're hard as nails, which means that when they do fail they explode in a pretty spectacular fashion. It doesn't happen often though.

I think they're around R1200 a rim.

I've had 2 sets of 823 and in my experience they were KAAAAAAAK strong. As I've said before. I've flatted with them at Tokai and just rolled down the road. On more than one occasion. My first set were on my Izimu and Makulu. They did 2 France trips and I never had to true the wheel. Ever. Not once.

They are the basis for the Deemax rim as far as I am aware. All they do with the deemax is grind material away to make them lighter. That's what I've been told anyway.
