Road tyre pressure - 23mm v 25 mm

I'm putting new 25mm race tyres onto my bike for the 94.7 on Sunday.

I currently run my 23mm Gatorskins @ 8.0 bar. Do I run the wider tyre at a different pressure?

(I'm sure this has been covered elsewhere, but you know how you can never find stuff when you really need it?)

First check that the 25mm are going to fit. I had to take mine back due to there being way too little clearance. The 25mm are nogals quite a bit wider than the 23mm

Also made the change, running 25mm at 8bar now

Yes had the same problem with my aero road bike, but the wife is smiling no, as she now got GPX4000 tyres

As for your question

If you run 8 bar on 23

you could run 6.8-7 bar on 25 and it would been the same, if not better.

Because the area is bigger pressure doesn't have to be so high.

Edit #grammar again

I run my 25mm at 6 Bar compared to 8 bar on 23mm. I can't wait to get rid of my 23mm on my training bike. K@k ride now that I know the feel of 25mm.

It's a bit more complicated than that. The 25 is claimed to have a lower rolling resistance than 23, but only if run at the same pressure.

So, if you want more comfort and aren't worried about rolling resistance, then yes you can lower the pressure a bit. If you fitted the 25 to get the rolling resistance advantage, it must be run at the same pressure as the 23.

I run my Gatorskins and GP4000's at 9 bar ~ 25 and 23

Probably @ 7 bar i would say.. but on the tire it will show you the pressure, other than that go on feel it on a test ride.

I also made the change a few years ago.  Generally run at 8 bar (as I did on the 23mm) but I get a bit slack at checking the pressure. So I train at anything between 6 and 8 bar and race on 8 bar. Both on Gatorskins and GP4000s.

Made the change 3 years ago and won't go back to 23mm again

25's are smoother, safer (more grip when braking) and roll just as fast.

After much experimentation I found 7 Bar rear and 6.5 Bar front perfect for my weight of 77kg on a stiff Specialized Tarmac

Try it, you'll won't regret it!

I'm currently running a pair of Schwalbe Durano 28mm (direct from CRC as they weren't available locally). They are light (295g) and fit onto  my Dura Ace rims (circa 2007). The tyres indicate a range of 6.0 to 8.0 bar on the sidewall. I ride them at about 7 bar. Best thing I ever did for comfort.
