Bags (saddle pack regular) are ZAR1520 when you take out the UK VAT.

+ 12 gbp delivery

= ZAR1,775

No saving on delivery charges if you order more than 1.

Edit

And I am assuming SARS wants their cut too:  VAT + ????

There Sir, lies the problem.

Thinking of just buying the thing and having them made locally and selling them off to reduce the shock of the Durban dollar.

You'll be in for 15-40% duties. Depends how they are classified - parts, equipment, clothing...? I'll try and find out.

Why ?

Makes sense. Big saddle bag like the Apidura, a frame bag or what ?

Will PM him.

Plan to do so.....

Same quality tubing but the MCR comes with fat, comfy rubber. And just generally more suitable, comfort wise. IMO.

Saddle bag, bar bag (sweet roll or similar) and small frame bag is where I'm heading for my setup...

I seem to remember finding a lot of stuff on google re DIY frame bags?

Sorry I misread saddle for frame - late night last night!

I haven't found any templates but some interesting DIY saddle bag links follow. Hope they help....

I couldn't follow the link within the last URL - maybe it's broken? Perhaps some digging around for that may help?

I am thinking that a 3 day self supported ride from Willowmore to Calitzdorp via Klaarstroom, Meiringspoort, De Rust, over the Swartberg pass to Prince Albert and then back over the hill from the other direction to Calitzdorp in December.

Taking the dirt road to the north of the mountains between Willowmore and Klaarstroom, and the mountain road from De Rust past the caves. I am considering overnighting in Klaarstroom and PA.

This will be my first "expedition" and will ride alone.

I have been following this thread but am left with some questions.

First, my bike choice can either be a HT Niner MCR or a Ritchey Swiss Cross CX bike. I am leaning towards the Ritchey but am concerned about gearing up the Swartberg Pass two days in a row.

Other than that, is there any convincing reason to rather do it on a MTB ?

I will travel as light as I can with a change of clothing and a credit card (ok, probably cash) and will stay in guest houses as it will be my first attempt.

Is a frame bag necessary or can a rucksack do the job ? I am hesitant to carry extra weight on my body and think that water will be my biggest challenge. There are few stops between Willowmore and Klaarstroom and it is likely to be very hot.

What else should I be concerned about?

Cross bike should be fine in terms of road surface from Willowmore to PA

When in December? I would be visiting family in Klaarstroom and can potentially join you from there to PA. (Unless you would prefer to ride alone)

I would gladly share the road.

Dates are not certain but it will be after the 14th and before Christmas.

Ja, but you ride so frikking fast, you only need a few Litres of space anyway.

Us normal folk need big bags full of stuff.... ;)

It's a pity - I arrive just after Christmas. Next time.

Still, PM me if you hit Klaarstroom/Meiringspoort with a serious issue/emergency and need help.

I mentioned my plan to do a 3 day ride to my wife this morning and she said "why not do a week?"

I think that is a bit much, but would consider 5 days, so I am thinking of swinging through the Kammanassie before going over the Swartberg to PA.

I know it has been covered, but does anybody in SA stock the Apidura seat bags or the Revelate Vicacha ?

Hi Eddy

I purchased the second last Apidura bag locally.  They are very, very expensive to import at almost double the advertised price.

If you don't come right, you can borrow mine for a trip into that part of the world only - very special.

I plan to make a pattern and perhaps have some made locally if I can find the correct fabric.  I got mine from Yknot, Liesel @ 012  3459260.  Last one left so hurry.

(Just make sure you are seated when you hear the price)

Hi Sepia, seeing that you are in Durban maybe you should try and find an old unused spinnaker sail from the harbor or  surrounds. as far as I know it is a light and very strong material. Might work.

Just been catching up on this thread... havnt read it in a while...

Lot of good info!

I have since came right with wheels, got me a set of 29's with 35mm semi slicks, just to try them out

FYI, this do fit on my 27.5 frame

Now, my next task

ALSO to get a proper sadle bag, the rack & panniers I'm thinking of selling to help finance the sadlebag. the larger wheels wont allow me to fit the rack at the back anymore(the rack was bought for the GT 26" i had at the time) but still worked on the 27.5

But if i could get my hands on a patern i would give it a bash, i have made some frame backs in the past that did not turn out too shaby
