Heart Rate Monitor for my wife

Hi My wife recently started running and want to get  a Heart rate monitor. She did a funrun where a nother runner told her about her HRM that has a training prgram and tell you what to do when, according to your goals.

Of course I wanted to go get GPS/HRM at first but not sure how long this will last as she has never been fond of training. Very happy and excited that she has started now.

Can you guys perhaps recommend value for money HRM that has downloadable programs/coach as well as alarms that lets you know when you are going to slow/fast?

Polar RCX3 is a nice multisport watch. Think Sportsmans Warehouse have a good special on them at the moment, check their website.

Otherwise the Polar M400 which has just been released (should arrive in SA in the next month) also looks good for running, but not that compatible with cycling.

Check out http://www.dcrainmaker.com/ for a review of pretty much every watch available and his buyers guide.

The Adidas Mycoach helps you with your training while you are running.

I believe a HRM can be linked to it as well.

So could be a cheap option to get her going.

The App is free, you might need a bluetooth HRstrap

After I lost my 2e Bryton.. hubby insisted that I have something.. (I did protest as I was happy to ride without anything) but he still bought me the Polar RCX3 for bday the other day.. although I don't use the HR monitor I can say the device is really nice.. during the day it's a watch (nice and light) and when we go ride I strap it onto the bike mount... (apparently I wont lose it).. what is really cool is at 12 at night the screen goes on sleep mode and wakes up again at 6am.. so I have this amazing sense of relief when I wake up and look at my watch and the screen is sleeping cause I know I can lie in a bit longer. PS the exercise features are also cool.

Thanks for the info so far. Do not know the Polar MH400 will definately look at that and the Adidas Micoach.

She definettaly will not start riding so looking at running option only.

Does she want the HRM or you think she wants one? So far she has done a fun run from your description.

New runners sometimes don't want the complication. It is more fun to run for the joy of running than making it all about training. Training is a task not a fun activity.

My advice to people new to sport is to stick with the joy of it. Run at a pace you can talk to someone is always a good start. Tell her about fartleks between lamps posts. When she does that of her own accord regularly, a HRM might be a useful tool.

Or she may be really goal orientated and want to train like crazy, in that case, buy her the best.

Mine has 3 sports modes.. run, bike and other.. donno what the other is. .

You will need to buy the stride sensor extra (for running) I had to buy the spees sensor for the bike.

But I think I saw the polar that is for running only.. not sure on what model it is.

I would go for the Polar M400.  But I am biased.  I have a V800 and the latest Polar software is pretty good.  They also constantly upgrade the firmware and add new functions as they go along.

Hi,

I agreeand I did not want to complicate it, but she has been at it for 4 months now and did a few fun runs but since Last Saturday she has been borrowing my HRM which is Bike option only so carrying it in her hand. the lady she ran with have a HRM with Coach so she also looking for that now, but not sure what type of HRm it was.

do you get women specific HRM, or are all HRM unisex? (seriously)

edit: I mean the belt, to go around the lady parts or do you just put it beneath

The watches, yes. Generally the "female" ones have smaller faces, due to the average size of a woman's wrist being smaller than that of a man's. But for the higher end watches (910 / 920 / 930XT etc) this isn't the case - it's one for all.

I got edge 500 with hrt monitor and the belt work with Endomondo (Samsung S5 phone) which is a bonus

. Got a polar but i have problems with strava. Strava did not pick up both hrt monitors and i will not buy another. Then I stay with Garmin and Endomondo which give all the stats without problems

You get smaller straps for the ladies,

It goes under the boobies.
