Hi Guys,

I am building a nice bike for my son, but unfortunatley you cant get decent parts for a smaller people. A 175mm crank isnt going to help him at all.....

I want to shorten the crank arms of a new Deore crank but need to know if this possible and if so does anyone know of an engineering company that could cut and thread crank arms for pedals?

Is the new Deore crank solid or hollow? Any advice would be welcome.

2 things - one, you'll need to find a crankset without hollow arms. Two, you'll need to get a bike shop to do the tapping for you, because the thread on a left hand crank is unique to left cranks. Park Tool make a tap, but it costs a small fortune.

I specialise in aluminium fabrication and welding. It is possible and no real fancy or special tools are required other than the left hand tap wich I am sure I have as have lengthened crank arms before.

Thats great news, so if I can find a suitable crank you can do the rest?

I will send you a pm.

Cheers

Michael.

OK, I have some solid advice here. I have done this before, but not specifically on the crank mentioned.

Firstly, the LBS will make a mess of it!!!! It needs to be done on a Bridgeport mill or alike, clamped and set up perfectly square and drilled and then tapped in that same position with right and left hand taps.

It is critical that the pedal spindle is parallel with the BB spindle. The 'seat; area needs to be milled with a end mill slightly larger diameter than the diameter of the clamping face of the pedal spindle. Most cranks are curved.
