On my way in to work this morning. Passed a guy walking along with 2 ztr crest rims...definitely not his....but he also must have just got them from some where.

Guessing there must be a chop shop in the area.and the parts go in all sorts of directions.

Would have approached him but being just me and my bike and 3 of them, I wasn't going to say a word.

Not cool seeing that knowing it's probably come off someone's beloved.

Clearly there is a market for stolen bike parts. They've made a business of it. The big question here though is who is buying all the chopped goods? They are just as guilty!

IMHO. You buy stolen bikes/ parts, you are no better than the thief that stole it. Given the amount of bike thefts, it is a very lucrative business

Considering that bikes now cost a small fortune, surpasing most small car prices, it is no wonder that theft and highjacking is becoming a regular occurrence in our 3rd world poverty enriched country. I have insured my bikes but i think most do this now, it doesnt resolve the problems, just helps us financially when replacing them, surely more companies like Tracker can get on board with small light weight tracking units, what about bike manufacturers using datadot tech on parts etc. Something like this www.integratedtrackers.com are there more products out there that are locally available and supported?

Yes, if they are aware of the goods being stolen.

And there is a market amongst thieves for bikes and their goodies. I can remember on my way to Rage this year I saw a black guy who looked like your typical garden helper cruising on a Dual Suspension bike couldn't make out the which brand it was, it had Mavic rims on the whole deal, just strolling around the shack area.

If you look at how the increase in bike thieving has gone up, there has got to be something going on somewhere.

Could have also been tanked rims the guy picked up from the garbage/an lbs to sell for scrap, especially seeing they are crests?

I really can't see a bike chop shop taking the rims off a set of wheels to sell them, they'd sell the complete wheels? Can just imagine the guy walked into the chop shop and said "dibs those Ztr rims, my wheel builder can rebuild my novatecs with them, save 200g, a bit flexy those crests but I need to crack 10kgs on my SS build"

There is a highly suspect well known hubber that frequents PWC, where ever that is. Recognised parts on his bike that were stolen. Just dont know how to nail him cos denial and proof are difficult issues to deal with. He posted pics of his bike here on the hub a week after a bike was stolen.

How would you know that the parts or bike is stolen?

Agree that it must be a very lucrative as easy market to tap into.
