NH injured himself at Rasa and said to me he rather gonna bail to recover for Munga . He is determined to bag this race

Here's hoping he achieves his goal, he seems to be on the right side of the equation but there's little room for error.

on those roads I dont think there is much chance of getting navigation wrong

Seen two errors already within the last 100k of the race, I think fatigue and no charge left on the Garmin could be playing a role here.

One of the last lone rangers PK enters Wellington to finish the Munga the other lone ranger GC is still 120km from the finish. He has 3 riders (SVH, PVDL & CH) resting up at RV5 50km ahead of him and CA and GR resting up at Tankwa 40km behind him. I wonder what thoughts are going through his head? Hole up at RV5 and wait for CA and GR to catch up and join them to the end? or should you be content with your own company and soldier on to the finish?

It is almost 16H00, it is getting cooler, going uphill might be easier, and the roads will be tar. My guess would be if you happy with your own company this far - may as well carry on to the end albeit it slowly

So far so good our first group of back markers finished 100km in 7 hours the last group are 8kms behind, that's more than 14kph. They've got roughly 200k to go and at this pace it's 14hrs on the bike which gives them 6 hrs of leeway. Well done boys!

ummm, well, not entirely :)

I know of a certain (motor)cyclist who came through here on his way to Prince Albert. I got a call at 23h00 that night. From Calvinia.

Nathrix before this all over I want to thank you for your contribution to this thread since the start . Although there is a lot of information on the Munga website you added life to this . Thanks

Thank you kkkcycle.

This thread and all who posted here, including the OP of this thread, helped me better understand the type of new format Alex tried to achieve with The Munga MTB by discussing + sharing all aspects of it and the thinking behind it and the strategy needed to finish it and how brutal it is on your mind and body. Admittedly I tend to get a bit obsessive and carried away at times when something really intrigues me :whistling:

John winning the Munga was not a surprise. Even so, there were tears of joy in our household when he crossed the finish line in first place hours ahead. My wife is responsible for managing the sponsorship of the 3 year old RMB Change a Life development team. Martin had explained his strategy of completing the race with minimal sleep (learned from his Freedom Challenge win) and how they would keep him awake through the nights.

The emotional text she received from John shortly after his win was testament to how sincere, humble and appreciative he is as a human being. It really couldn't have happened to a nicer guy.

So who needs a 29er to win a 1000km MTB race anyway? Pyga Zero650 for the win! Well done John. You are an absolute legend.
