Dual Suspension Shock Setting

Hi All

Having ridden hard-tail for a few years I have finally indulged myself and taken on a full suspension bike.

Here is the big question:

How does one set up shock pressures on air shock on a dual suspension bike - Front (140mm travel) and rear to ensure an optimum ride?

I would imagine the front pressure would be different to the rear?

The front shock I seemed to have got the idea from finding info off the web and riding hardtail, but the rear shock info seems to be a little elusive....

Can anyone help?

Just to clear up.

It's a suspension fork, not a front shock.

Work according to the manufacturer's recommendations. Alternatively, simply adjust the pressure according to your desired sag. Run higher pressures for less sag (generally for more cross country type riding) and lower pressures for more sag (generally for more aggressive trail/gravity oriented riding).

If you have RS components, they might have sag markings, which helps in setting up sag. If not, break out a ruler and calculator.

you start with setting both fork and shock up according to the sag recommendations of the manufacturer. These recommendations are based on your riding weight (body mass + mass of any equipment) and are included in the user's manual.

Then its ride, adjust, rinse repeat till you are happy with your bike's performance. There are always attempts to shortcut this iterative process by ppl asking other riders of similar mass what settings they've used.  But that way, you are effectively missing out on some important self-learning wrt suspension settings and how they translate to riding experience.

For Fox start with 2x your weight in PSI .90kg =180psi and tweak by riding  .Sag height helps but I found starting hard and letting out air while I ride gives the best idea of what you want .I use about 20 psi more on a RS than fox
