15mm QR/TA on a QR Fork

Hey, guys.

Quick tech question here. My wife's bike has a RS fork with QR dropouts, but the front hub seems to be a 15mm QR or TA.

So the question is: Can you run a 15mm QR on a regular QR fork or have I got this all wrong?

Below are some pics.

What hub is it? Some are convertible with inserts. Others not.

If not, time for a fork upgrade

According to the Spez website, it's the following hub: Specialized Hi Lo disc, OS28 end caps, sealed cartridge bearing, QR, 32h

What I'm trying to figure out is whether you  can run a 15mm hub/TA combo on a regular QR fork.

No. It won't fit. The TA is 15mm diameter, whereas the max diameter a qr dropout will accept is 9mm (hence 9mm qr)

I don't think you can convert those hubs to qr, so it's either a new hub and wheel rebuild or a new fork.

Yes you can if you are able to find the adapters for that hub. 15mm T/A hubs can usually accomodate an adapter to fit a thinner axle. Several brands of aftermarket hubs are supplied with the adapters... or you can order them.

I'm not sure if adapters are available for your Spez wheel/ hub tho. If not it will be cheaper to fit a convertible hub on the wheel than to buy new forks.

No it is not possible to run a 15mm hub/TA on a 9mm qr fork as far as I know. A 9mm fork can not be converted to a 15mm TA fork, only hubs can be converted, and only certain hubs has this capability. You can try to find hub converters to make the hub 9mm and then use a 9mm axle. But 15mm TA is better.

I don't think that it is a Thru Axle that you have there. It looks like a fancy Quick Release, DT Swiss make a similar one.

I think you're right, Peter. It is DT Swiss.

So is this basically a 9mm solid axle QR and not you're regular skewer?

Yes it looks like a 9mm axle, to be sure, unscrew the end cap and try to measure the width of the axle.

Edit: it actually looks like a 12mm rear axle.

Are you sure that axle is not for the rear maybe? Because it looks wider than 9mm and thinner than 15mm. 12mm Rear thru-axle maybe?

Nope. This is how the bike runs at the moment. It's not really a question of will it work, it does. I'm just trying to figure out exactly what setup it is.

Then it is 9mm. Just measure it to be sure. I have not seem a 9mm axle that looks like that, but I have not used 9mm since more than 10years ago, and that does not look like the old school 9mm axles.

Found it: http://www.dtswiss.com/Components/RWS/RWS-Thru-bolt

It's DT Swiss' RWS 9mm Thru-Bolt. From the website:

One of the strongest wheel mounting systems around, the RWS Thru bolt has been proven reliable time and time again. This alloy axle RWS is available in 9mm fronts and 10mm rears. It is the perfect way to strengthen up and solidify an open drop out front fork and wheel combination as well as a standard drop out rear 135mm bike frame.

Found on CRC: The RWS thru bolt system is 100 % compatible with any standard frame or fork that would normally use a quick release!
