Building a Cyclo Cross bike

I am about to ask a question, which well, its kinda odd.

Mrs Slowbee is having confidence issues with her road bike. The gear changes, braking and over all balance are an issue for her. But she does however enjoy riding the bike when non of those issues are in play (open tar road with wide shoulder and no traffic).

With the wider tyres and disc brakes, I am considering a CX bike for her.

Against this skill set (and not being a very strong rider), would you guys go with a well specced Cotic X or a newer breed of bike like the giant anyroad or spez sequia (priced around the R19k mark).

EDIT: this is with the view of road riding. She would want to do Stellenbosch road tour and Argus on it, maybe some dirt roads, but that is it. She has a mountain bike to take off road.

I can only give a view on the X. Mine, and its not well spec'd, has been a revelation. Comfy, faster than you'd think on the road (and mine weighs 11 kg all in with random parts) and a joy on dirt roads and even some single-track (and I'm a roadie). I'm sure you could kit out a 2nd hand X with say, 105 and decent wheels with gravel and a spare set of road tyres for a fair bit less than R19k.

Having said that, I like the look of the Anyroad and the Sequoia too!

Just made some calls, the Anyroad is off the table. Comes with cable disc brakes and the reviews have not been the best.

Mmm, maybe I should go weigh her road bike and see if she will notice the difference in terms of weight on a cotic x

I'd reckon you could easily get an X in under 10kg without trying - others could comment perhaps? I've used any kit I had lying around with no consideration of weight. Tracking down an X may be the real problem?

What size is she?

My mom wants to get this as she hates mtb but likes greenbelts.

May I ask what a well-specced Cotic would go for?

have no idea!

how much is Fat Boab selling his for ?

Hey, let's quash that rumour!

But based on my experience, say a 2nd hand frame set for R3k. Thereafter go shopping based on your spec requirements? 2nd hand group set R3k-R6k? New wheels R4k, Brakes R2k-R4k?

If one has a donor bike more parts can be transferred. If you want to mix and match groupsets, even cheaper.

I reckon I've spent less than R6k on mine - photos are up the thread - but I had lots of bits available on a purchased 2nd hand frame set plus canti brakes.

sorry Fat Boab! thought you were selling yours. getting lines crossed with work

I have a planet-x Kaffenback 2 frameset... I am 1.74m short and it is perfect.

My thought was to built it with 650b plus road tires and a 42 1x front ring and use it as a commuter but I went full retard and made a whole other piece of radical heaven.

If you want to have a look let me know. I have the frameset in black, a brand new red headset a set of red QR hubs and some wtb i23 rims and spokes to build up and go on there.... if you want to stay with 700c then it fits up to 32c tires... but the 650b plus is a chicken dinner methinks

I also have some 2nd gen BB7s to throw in the mix, some carbon 172.5 cranks and a heap of other bits and bobs
