Ok guys , I have a question ... Can you use your 29r wheels for your CX bike ? Or are they purpose built for a CX bike frame ? Humble apologies if it's a "blond " question ..

Of course.

My i19's can probably fit a 2.3" at a squeeze yet I'm running 1.35", so I have plenty of room to play with.

Of course, they also become a spare set for wheels for my On-One and Surly.

Great , ok also if I unrstand it . "MonsterCross is converting your 29r with road bars and CX tires ... So my current MTB 29r I can make a monster cross ... If I read the thread correctly .. If so man o man my MTB can be a Monstercross / CX soon ..

According to the knowledge kings at Mtbr.com, a monstercross is drop barred Cx with a tyre width exceeding 40c.

I think a monstercross is anything that goes off-road that has drop bars and knobblies.

The definitive monstercross thread of all time:

I used this religiously when first building my CX

I don't subscribe to the "monstercross is not a MTB with drop bars" idea, though...

Some awesome builds, pics and stories in there...

Happy reading!

ChroMo has put you onto a good thread above. Your statement is correct but monsterx isn't limited to 29r (thank the pope - that whole debate would ruin this genre for me). 26" bikes can be monstercrossed too. I've read articles of guys monstercrossing fatbikes. I believe a 'traditional' CX bike can also be monstercrossed by fitting bigger tyres, if they will fit. It's a bit of a 'frankenbike' genre, but that's the beauty of it.

Regarding the tyres, traditionally (if tradition has established in monstercross), they're bigger than regular CX tyres. Closer to normal MTB tyres. But again, if you want to put drops on your MTB and fit 35c tyres to your rims, no ones going to stop you - none of us anyway... We'll probably ask if we can take the bike for a ride :).

Have fun!

Awesome. Enjoy. Bare in mind it's not a regular request at an LBS (mine is used to my strange habits now) so they might need a little guidance in terms of what you personally want to achieve.

What are your thoughts around shifters? And what bars do you plan on using?

I eventually collected some goodies for my CX bike this morning.

A set of Sammy Slicks as I do a lot of road riding with the bike. The SLX cassette as previously mentioned will be mated to an old 9spd SLX RD. Don't ask me how but yes, a 10spd Shimano STI works with a 9spd RD.
