Shimano 180 disc installation question

I upgraded the Shimano 160mm disc to 180mm on my Momsen Vipa.

The Shimano adapter plate is fitted correctly but u will notice that it puts the caliper at an angle.

Anyone have any experience with these adapter plates?

Just had a look at mine, those washers need to be between the caliper and the adapter plate. And there should be washers on both sides.

At least this is how mine was installed! ^_^

Afaik those dish washers are not standard with Shimano calipers. They normally come with Avid brakes.

Nice because they permit 3 axis instead of 2 axis pad alignment and yes there should be a set above and below each caliper tab to get 3 axis alignment.

Just thinking that if Shimano calipers are not meant to have those will it not move the pads away from the contact surface on the rotor?

Yes it will push the caliper out a bit. Depending on the frame it may or may not work out.

I have found those rotor adapters do not always fit perfectly - I think is due to all the various frames maybe not complying exactly to the standard dimensions for the mounting posts.

In this particular case - I think the cone washers should be removed entirely. The last 2 sets of Shimano brakes I bought did not have washers so I don't think they belong there. Just bolt the caliper directly to the adapter/frame.

Regarding the adapter - to make sure it is correctly installed there is usually a direction arrow on the adapter and a F or R in the number to denote Front or Rear. Make sure you have the arrow facing forward and the correct adapter for the end of the bike you are working on.

Looking at your pic one can see from the wear pattern on the discs that the pads are riding too high by approximately the same distance as the height of those cone washers. The washers are not supposed to be there.

Taking a look at photos of my previous Scott Spark 910, it was also fitted according to the Shimano drawing, so I have to assume it is correct even though it does not look mechanically correct.

According to Shimano drawing for front caliper in the instructions, your washers are placed incorrectly.

I don't have the instructions for the rear caliper only the front.

The Shimano drawing shows the washers installed under the bolt head captive washer, not between the caliper and adapter bracket.

If you install it like this, they serve no other purpose than spacers. They do not allow for any sideways movement for proper caliper aligment.

Logic dictates that they are placed between the caliper and the spacer, to allow for the adjustment.

Thanks, will look into it. This is how the mechanics installed it!

Ok it appears my previous posts were slightly incorrect because Shimano drawings show these cone washers even though 2 previous brake sets I bought were supplied without them.

On Avid brakes you get 3 axis pad alignment and install a set above and one set below the caliper. Avids are meant to install that way - certainly the older versions I am familiar with.

On Shimano the purpose of the cone washer ABOVE the caliper is to compensate for the underside of the bolt head not being exactly perpendicular to the bolt axis - this cause a problem of shifting the caliper sideways when you tighten the bolt after setting pad alignment.

If in doubt follow the Shimano drawing exactly.

Logic may dictate, but that's not where they go on Shimano brakes. As per the photo in the second post, only half the pads are contacting the rotor.

Avid uses two sets of spherical washers to help you make a pig's ear of aligning calipers on mounts that aren't correctly faced. Their new Guide range has done away with them.

I have no idea why Shimano use them.

Ideally brake mounts should be faced so the calipers align properly - Park make a tool each for post and IS mounts, but not many people use them.

AFAIK carbon frames usually have metal inserts for post mount threads, so I'd imagine so. Wyatt would probably be better qualified to answer that than me though...
