Hi.

I am wanting to do a bit of a tour between Xmas and New Years, but nothing that is officially organised.

So I was wondering if anybody here has done a 400km-500km, 3/4 day trip from JHB to anywhere really and then drive back.

Something like JHB to Durban (but not that one) via back routes... or Bleom via Clarens type of thing.

Any recommendations or routes and interesting places to stay would be very much appreciated.

Speak to Trackz here, he did Pta to Dullstroom in 1 push (22 hours) a few months ago. You could split it into a few days, and keep going until you got to Waterval Boven, or even end at Mankele... That side of the country is beautiful, just not sure of the MTB routes past Belfast.

Been talking about doing something like that for over a year now, and keen to do that some time in 2015, even have some support crew that have volunteered to set up camp along the way.

Back in varsity I did this a few times (about 2-3 years ago)

Jhb - Durban via Clarens (10 days)

East London - Cape Town (10 days)

We were students so we took the roads less travelled a lot, camped on the side of the road a few times, so depends what you looking for. But if you are a few guys its not unsafe at all

Do you maybe have in indication of the routes you took?

How about a ride around Lesotho on the ZA side?

Start in Clarens (only 3-4hrs from JHB) and go clock wise. Awesome roads (lots of gravel) and very scenic. Might be long and the western stretch is kinda boring.

If you're into something more hardcore, enter Lesotho at monantsa, go to Afriski and towards katse via the kao mine road. Exit at caledons poort. It's hard as nails though with at least 2 3000m plus summits
