My 5c's worth...

It's very unlikely that your Chiro  created/caused the herniated disc. From what I  have read, "motor vehicle accident 23yrs ago' will be a major contributing factor. With a spinal manipulation/adjustment- there is more emphasis on creating "movement" in the zygopophyseal joint (facet joint) then the vertebral disc.

What is bizarre- why the chiro ( particularly)/physio did not refer you for x-rays or MRI scan.

 

Bottom line- glad the cause of your pain has been identified and corrected.

Don't let up on the exercises...and speedy recovery

OK, 2 weeks after my spine surgery I had a follow up appointment with the surgeon. All going very well according to him. I just have to keep taking these capsules called "Neurontin" 300mg per night. My own doctor told me "don't read the package insert, just take them" so that's what I think I will do. Aside from that, I am allowed to swim but no bike riding until April. Not cool, but probably good advice. I am somewhat impatient about recovery but he told me to be patient. The nerve damage will take a while to recover. This must be true because I still have numbness down the back of my leg and I cant stand on my toes on that leg. Patience... :rolleyes:

Neurontin! Best thing ever! I had my op in 2010 and still suffer from a bit of numbness, especially in the shin area.

 

Zwonnikoff sorted me out too. Loves his Jag, and doesn't say much. Good luck with the 6-month brace, and the sloooooooooooooooooooooooooow sex.

Ja, the sex thing... I could tell you a story about how it woke up in the wee hours to discover that 'it works' but I think I would be breaking forum rules...

I am in the brace until end Feb and thereafter only when I'm in a car for a month or two. I am already getting some sensation back in my buttock. Glad just to have some improvement!

Good stuff. Physiotherapy is your best friend. I go once a month to realign things and to give my sciatic a good pounding. It helps alot, especially before and after a massive ride. Sometimes you need to throw that Rambo headband away and just let someone ease that pain and frustration away.

I understand that sciatica is common amongst tall people, especially those with weak cores. Well, I'm 6'5" and only ever sit up to grab a beer, so yes, sciatica has been with me for years.

The only thing i've found that offers immediate help and relief, far more so than physio, is dry-needling - kind of like accupuncture on steroids. The needles go in deeper and then they get manipulated into the nerve where you feel like you're being electrocuted. But the stimulation and immediate blood rush to the area offers instant relief. I'm a huge fan.

I go to Rob Maris (physio, biokineticist and accupuncturist) in the Melrose Arch Virgin gym. I'm not a member there - he takes all clients.

 

I've also done about 6 months of pilates which I didn't find made a huge difference.

Well, last night I got on the bike for the first time since 13 December 2014! Over 3 months of no riding at all!

I managed to do 11:29 on the IDT. My left leg is still in the process of re-connecting the nerves to the calf muscle and I still can't stand on my toes on my left leg. Needless to say, it was a challenging 11:29.

I spent some time unclipping my right leg and just turning my left to try and get the pedal action going. Flip. Still a lot of ground to cover before I can ride properly but at least I have made a start. :thumbup:

Well, last night I got on the bike for the first time since 13 December 2014! Over 3 months of no riding at all!

Had the exact thing happen to me a year ago. Was my L4/L5 with a very bad rupture of the disc. I was riding again by July. Still have some numbness in the left leg with some discomfort of the nerve. Its a slow road to recovering 100% so take it easy.

ok... Ive had first hand experience in this whole story, so let me give some advice.... Firstly, i had a post on here two years ago regarding my total L3,4,5 and S1 rupture or what ever you want to term it.... I am 2 meters tall and my Doc said it is more frequent with taller people due to the more frequent bending to fit in cars,door and so on. The cause is most likely a hard jolt or impact, or in my case simple wear and tear, or as it is termed, disc degeneration. now the *** bit, the disc cannot regenerate or pop back, once the center bit has ruptured, its done, damaged for life, second *** bit is, if you have nerve damage, you most likely going to have it for life, nerve and brain tissue do n not easily regenerate, I no longer have pain in my left leg, but there is a slight delay in contraction and slight power loss, oh, I did have a 4 level fusion, with hardware, and was back on the IDT within 6 weeks. The real secret is core,core core,planks and any other tummy training, and keep your upper body mass as low as possible!! I am still using Traumaset/Tramil when its cold but apart from that I have never felt better. And my riding is the bit that was least effected

Sounds like your back really had it bad! Good advice on keeping the core strong there. I'm totally off pain killers and have no more back pain. Luckily I had no hardware/fusions etc - they simply removed my ruptured disk. Do I understand correctly that your left leg is still not back to normal?

yes, the sharp nerve pain has gone, but i have slight power loss which is caused by a delay in nerve impulse, my nerve took a big knock, I pedal very smooth with my right leg, but my left up stroke lags a little behind, I also struggle a tad to lift up my left leg as high as my right as if you were putting on shoes or socks, that I all have to do sitting down, or put my left leg in shorts first, then right, otherwise I trip myself up.... Oh, and try not to twist at your waiste at all, like twisting to reverse a car, learn to look forward and use the mirrors.....

The damage to the vertebrae is an old injury but the recent disk stress could have been caused by something as simple as twisting or stretching. My GP says that it is quite likely that the chiropractor caused the rupture not realizing that the disk was already halfway messed up. So much as I support chiropractic, after this episode, I would not recommend it if you suspect disk bulge/prolapse at all.

Stay away from Chiroquacktors....go to a proper Physiotherapist. Your doctor will tell you the same. I have first hand experience.

Are you able to pedal properly yet? What exercises do you do to help?

Stay away from Chiroquacktors....go to a proper Physiotherapist. Your doctor will tell you the same. I have first hand experience.

I did some testing a month or so ago and I have about 10 to 15% less power in my left leg. I still get light sciatica from time to time. A basic seated sciatic stretch does wonders to loosen the nerve up a bit. 

 

I do a lot of stretching and very basic core work exercises given to me by a biokineticist. Also do a fair bit of weight training at gym. 

 

Pedalling is back to normal but I don't ride as aggressively as I did  before. 

 

Im also convinced that the chiro sessions did the final damage to my back.
