Thug Posted January 5, 2015 Posted January 5, 2015 I've had Thule roof mounted pro-rides on my last 2 cars which is now close to 4.5 years Very happy with them and only a slight increase in fuel consumption.
DJR Posted January 5, 2015 Posted January 5, 2015 I have bike racks on the trailer, on the roof and on the spare wheel and have used tow ball mounted ones. They all have pros and cons. Buy what you like and can afford, but just take your bike along and go ride!
Spoke n Bean Posted January 5, 2015 Posted January 5, 2015 I too have the polo sedan. What I did was went to Autobar towbars, great towbar and only cost me R1650 fully installed. Bought a Thule 2 bike carrier for R1350 and I have never had any troubles. Only thing I struggle with is fitting my girlfriends 29er small frame and my 650b med frame together. It works but I need to remove the seats most times. I have seen several cars with severe panel dents and bad scratches from those strap on racks, helping me make my decision.
Long Wheel Base Posted January 5, 2015 Posted January 5, 2015 Dude..... No need to over-react I HAVE measured increased fuel consumption with just a roofrack on the car, let alone bikes. It DOES make a difference albeit a smallish one. Also my comments about overhead structures were intended to point out the inconvenience of roof mounted bikes....not an admission of having smashed precious bikes into them.......yet! [emoji1] The only time I prefer roof mounting is on dirt roads because it is cleaner for the bikes. No over reaction... Just do not understand the advice to fit a rear mount when there is a higher likelihood of someone rear ending you than hitting overhead objects. Any item attached to a vehicle will make the economy higher, i have checked and rechecked, my economy has not been changed by the racks and bikes, maybe my car design works well with the equipment on the roof(am not an aero expert so have no idea)Is it Friday already? Patchelicious Posted January 5, 2015 Posted January 5, 2015 I have all 3. Rear mount hanger, Towbar platform and roof rack. I prefer my roof rack one, simple, not in the way and super easy to load.
