Suspension fork oil leak

My Fox 32 Float 29 Evolution CTD Air started to leak oil from the seal on the right stanchion. The leak is quite slow. Any idea what could cause this? Was just serviced about 2 months / 500km ago. Should I have it looked at? Im hesitant to take it back to the shop that serviced it due to extremely poor service experience.

I ride a lot of rocky\rooty singletrack, could it be that I'm pushing the fork too hard?

When the fork stops "leaking" then worry - it means the oils run out...

Most forks do seep oil thru the "seals" although these are dustwipers and not pure seals per se...so like I say if it stops seeping then worry.

Is it fork oil (runny and dripping down the fork leg) or just a bit of grease/lube that has come past the wiper and sitting on the stanchion leg?

The former is a problem...the latter not so much.

A pic or two would help us to assess how bad it is.

Hi, thanks for the replies. It looks rather sticky to me, perhaps grease. What worries me is the sudden onset of the oil/grease leak. The pic attached show how it forms a ring round the stanchion.

Nothing major to worry about, just keep an eye on it and if it gets any worse get it looked at.

I would get it looked at.  If oil comes out, crud goes in.  Those are wiper/seals and should not leak like that. The last thing you want is to damage the stanchion.

Agree with David. If properly done, those fork seals do not do that. Once you get scratches on the stanchion from mixed oil and dirt, they won't seal any more. The time to fix is now.

Ok thanks for the pic. It is grease not fork oil. Not too urgent but maybe worth getting it checked. The wiper seals should be serviced at least every 6 months or so if you are riding regularly. Fox manual says every 30h but my lbs agrees that is overkill.

My stanchions became score after about 2 months. they are now seriously scored but it is also 2 years later. But as I see it the outer stanchion does not do much other than serve as a guide. It is inside the station that the action takes place.

So am I correct in saying the outer damage is more cosmetic?

No, any damage/ scoring is very bad as it creates a path way for the oil to get out and the dirt to get in.

The 30hr service is the lowers service. Its worth paying attention to this and once you have done the job a couple of times it takes less than 20 minutes. The foam rings inside the seal can get quite manky!

Talking about leaking forks, I serviced my fox 32 float RL forks three weeks ago. Replaced the dust & oil seals with new skf fox ones and for the past 10 rides it's been leaking hideously - streaming right down onto the lower leg. I've actually been keeping a rag in my pocket to dry it like every 4km! :-/ Eish!

Could it be I got a dud fox seal? ...Can it be returned to a bike shop for replacement?
