Marijan Posted January 6, 2015 Posted January 6, 2015 Has anyone been doing the cradle recently? The sheer number of broken glass bottles the past few weeks in the yellow lane is shocking. Some sections are so bad, it is quite easy to get 2 successive punctures in one stretch. I just saw a rider last week out of spare tubes as he got two punctures in a row. Is this an act of taxi drivers smashing their bottles on the side of the road or some nutcase with a vendeta against cyclists?
rawbone Posted January 6, 2015 Posted January 6, 2015 Usually seems to be worse after month end so I'm guessing it's payday drinking. New Years Eve probably contributed to the recent lot. Pisses me off no end though

I have gotten a puncture there EVERY ride for the last 7 rides.On the one ride, between the 3 of us, we got 7 punctures!! Its disgusting.I have even started entertaining the thought of doing a quick loop (Something Country to Caves and back) early on a Sat with a broom and sweeping what I can just so that I can enjoy the next 4 loops....

BDF Posted January 6, 2015 Posted January 6, 2015 I agree, its disgraceful. After that "Joburg Day" concert last year it was the worst I have ever seen it. It would be great if the council would send one of those street sweeper vehicles around there once a week. That would hopefully also sort out a lot of the gravel in the cycling lane too.

If we seem them out in the Cradle with brooms cleaning up the glass or sand, we tip them R5. That way we get clean lanes and they get an income. What about the people that are running the MTB course - maybe they have a management structure we can donate to.

This might be a bit pessamistic, but 1 problem that might arise out of this is that once it's cleaned you might find 1 or 2 "entrepreneurs" break glass, in the name of job creation.
GreatGusto Posted January 6, 2015 Posted January 6, 2015 I hear you, but a clean lane is a clean lane, and nobody will continuously stand there breaking glass a sweeping it up - there is a diminishing return. I've sent a letter to Hein who manages the Cradle world Heritage Site.

These days I get more punctures in and aroud town then when I go for 50km+ rides across the veld!
EmptyB Posted January 6, 2015 Posted January 6, 2015 I've always thought its part deliberate and part weekend drinking. Seems to be getting worse....even the cradle single track is getting bad and some of it definitely looks malicious!! Total w@nkers.
