Is a trail bike + xc bike necessary?

I run an Anthem X with an epicon 120mm fork, perfect for me.

Never wished for more travel.

Disclaimer: Check with manufacturer before chucking on longer forks as it may void warranties.

also don't try turning a fragile XC superlight frame into a DH machine... make sure your XC machine has a bit more beef...

For 15k you would be getting a midrange HT for XC.

Now consider..... Modern shocks, forks and geo reduce a lot of the pedal bob and inefficiency of older bikes so your 2014 Trance probably already quite good in this area. Make sure your suspension can lock out or seriously stiffen up for pedalling. Then get a spare set of wheels. Fit one set with fast light tyres for XC and the other with big gnarly tyres for trail shredding. Any remaining funds go for a good dropper and drivetrain upgrades to XT / XO spec or better. Look at optimising gear ratios for your level of endurance when you make the upgrade....maybe go 1x10 or 1x11.

If budget is the only constraint (say R35k tops) and trail bike the way to go, (with that budget, second hand) which is best.

29 vs 650b

Scott Genius, Giant Trance, Specialized Enduro, Santa Cruz (?) 5010 c but that would be out of budget, or Pyga 110 / 120 ?????

Assume I go with upgrading the trance, what would you do with R10-15k? In order of importance? (Tyres have been upgraded). Does xt make a massive difference over slx? I know a dropper is a must but does the fork really need upgrading? Thanks for advice much appreciated

Great advice thank you. Does xt or xo make a massive difference to slx?

Performance wise no not really but it is lighter and still durable. After the wheels and dropper maybe only upgrade drivetrain as it wears out. Consider bars and stem if existing are not optimised for you. I went from 650mm on my 26er to 720 on 29er. Took a while to adjust to it but happy now.

yes. Definitely. The Revelation 150mm or the Pike 160 would work wonders for the bike. If you want the ability to ratchet it down, then the Dual Position pike would be better.

No issues fitting a 150mm fork with 140 at the back? Any idea where I'll find decent price on the revelation? Thanks man

None at all. In fact the Trance SX is exactly the same bike, but with a 160mm Pike at the front.

Decent price on a revelation though... cwc / Evobikes or try Action cycling in cape town city centre. Sure they'll be able to make a plan for you :)
