Fox 32 ctd 140mm. Contemplating getting a talas 140-120 (to help with uphill/xc geometry). Any thoughts? Rockshox better?

That is not a horrible fork. If looking to convert your bike for an XC bias but still nice on trails then you want to make it lighter and more responsive. Some of the suggestions being made here are leaning the other way towards turning it into a trail monster. Keep your focus on what you want to do.

I have 2014 Factory series 34 FIT CTD 140 on my bike. The Climb setting nearly locks it out and works well. Maybe a dual position Pike or Talas would be better but for R12k?? I doubt it would transform the bike into a racer . If you need to drop the front for the odd race then you can turn the stem over and drop the stack height in 5 min for free.

I think changing the fork is a LOT of $$ for moderate benefit and you could spend those $$ more wisely on other stuff to lighten and stiffen the bike for your XC goal.....like XX1 or a carbon wheelset, carbon bars, light saddle. Others will disagree.

If you get a 2nd wheelset consider buying 2 sets of identical hubs so you can upgrade your existing wheels too. Fit same discs and cassette to both. Then you can swop from one set to the other without realigning brakes or altering chain length and you can cannibalise spares from one to the other in an emergency

Very good points here. I'd still suggest a dropper as minimum though.

upgrade the trance.

If it were me, 160mm pike, dropper and tires - 15k done

rims too if you dobt like yours (stock rims are often not great, ztr flows for me cus im big/fat)

dual position if you want, I have a dual position myself but never change the travel, got it because I was worried about running more travel in the front, but it rocks

Love my Reverb ..... but the one place you probably won't use it much is on a typical SA XC course ????????????....but yes I' d still get one if I didn't already have.

I have too many bikes, but If I could choose only 2, it would be a 650b trail bike and a 29r hardtail.  So go get yourself a 29r XTC.  It's a new year, you deserve another bike.

Also considering a dual position fork.  My 2015 Trance weighs just on 12kg.  But the head angle whilst climbing some steeper stuff sucks.

Would this fork screw my ability to enjoy anything slightly downhill?  And which fork should I consider?

Thanks for great advice. Tend to agree money is better spent on better components, most JHB trails are quiet mild (or completely insane and require a proper dh bike) and would also want to use bike for occasional races. Quick note: I weigh around 70kgs, I find the FOX 32 goes too deep into travel under braking force but I don't use more than 50-75% of fork sus in general riding even on a rough trail. It is pumped to spec and rebound seems ok. Fork is a bit sticky even after couple months riding.

Have been having this battle with myself for months now. Even put up my trail bike for sale(luckily didn't sell it) I sold my 29r dual instead. Unfortunately had to as things have been tight for last few months. I am now in the same boat....R20k 29r or 2nd wheel set with xc tyres. 2nd option far cheaper ,but still like to to do xc races though out the year and enjoy doing distance.

In my mind find it hard not to have a 29r...????

How have you gotten your trance down to 12kg? My 2015 is sitting at about 13.1kg
