watch out for Amazon Prime

I registered for a trial version of amazon Prime through amazon.com at the beginning of Feb (5th Feb), then cancelled a few days later. Last night I received a SMS saying 89 GBP was being processed on my card. I immediately logged into Amazon.com and it said I had no Prime membership...then went onto amazon.co.uk and sure as hell full ANNUAL membership had just been processed. Quickly cancelled and entitled to a refund but there is either something irregular with their software, or they are being very unscrupulous.

Bit annoyed as it will take a few days to sort out, and its never lekker to have R1600 odd plus international money handling fees yanked out your account.

Sent them a strongly worded email explaining the situation - I will be interested to hear their explination

I have been reading this thread with great interest and to be honest after 33 pages i still dont have a clear idea of what the best solution is, would somebody be able to summarize what the best solutions is?

i guess there are so many things to consider, but i hope i have it all below

ADSL Line Rental - Telkom 4 mb line

4mb Uncapped ADSL - ? mweb, Afrihost or Telkom

now this is where i get a little more confused... once you have your line do you need a TV set top box such as Apple TV, Google TV ROKU etc to be able to stream Netflix on your TV?

what is the total cost of a package like this? DSTV costs R800 per month circa, can you replace DSTV with an internet TV option and run all your mobile devices (Datawise) for the same price?

If somebody can give a me a summary of what is needed and the costs involved it will be greatly appreciated.

I think the reason there is all the confusion is that there are so many options.

Personally, I went with the Roku.

There's nothing wrong with the other options but I specifically wanted the Roku because of my home setup. I have a media server and at the time there was only a Roku app. I also got a good deal on the Roku off a fellow Hubber who had one he was no longer using.

If you already have a SmartTV that supports things like the Netflix app then that would probably be the quickest and cheapest way to get into this whole 'world'.

Hi Face Plant, last week I did the swop over and did all the sums as to the cost involved.

I would be paying as of 1 April (DSTV increase) R1397,00 per month for DSTV and my 2mb uncapped line consisting of the following per month:

Telkom Landline: R189

Telkom DSL Line: R165

MWeb Uncapped 2mb package: R199

DSTV: R844 (Premium + add ons, catch up etc.)

I will now be paying the following:

Telkom Landline: R189

Telkom DSL Line: R399

Afrihost 8mb Uncapped package: R327

This gives me a total spending of: R915 per month.

I will use Kodi on a Amazon FireStick which costs around R1700 from Takealot and use that to plug straight into the TV. It will connect to the Wifi and comes with a remote. I can then use it exactly how I would use a DSTV decoder set up. But I can also load netflix etc. onto it.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info! with the Afrihost uncapped package is there a fair use policy or is it totally uncapped?

I've got an uncapped 4mbps line which I now upped to 8mbps at Afrihost. Afrihost don't throttle its clieents. The even send me an email encouraging me to try and beat the download record for the month. So this one guy downloaded 1 Terrabyte in one month. What the hell he downloaded I don't know. But it was a Sh@t load of stuff.

I've been off DSTV 5 years and I use a very simple and cheap solution.

I have an old laptop, which I use as a media server, next to my TV. Bottom line I stream from this to my TV, using Mweb 2mbps uncapped, fine for Netflix.

I also have a Chromecast setup on another TV and using the Chromecast app, can watch on another TV from my phone, or Tab.

Simple and nice, even I could set it up without a problem!!!

I'd prefer to go 4mbps, but I live 4 km away from my nearest exchange, so too much dropoff, apparently.

There are simple solutions!

He's clearly trying to download the internet ;)

I think so too. My highest month data was I think 400Gig. I downloaded a crap load of Movies and Updated my pc to windows 10 etc. But nowadays, I don't come near 100gig.

Ive got my TV Connected to my PS3, Watching Netflix, Hulu etc, And my PC setup next to my tv with a 32" LED Screen. So when I want to watch rugby and watch a movie with wifey, I just turn the pc screen and voila, Spending time with wifey "brownie Points" and I get to watch my rugby..

Premium Uncapped Packages doesn't get throttled..

Correct, but looking last week the Premium was only R30 more per month than the home package. Go online today and it is R200 more per month, but if you let them look after your ADSL line as well its an extra R100 as opposed to the R399 with telkom. Quite confused because thats a jump of R170 since last week Wednesday.
