Advice Needed

Have decided to take the plunge and upgrade from my HT into the realm of a full suspension bike. My budget is around the 30k mark and I am not particularly technical when it comes to components. I have always just ridden my bikes as hard as I can and not worried too much about what bits are better or worse than others. I would appreciate some advice around what bikes would be good value around my budget and what I should try and avoid.

Most of my riding is the likes of Groenkloof, BRB, NF, Karkloof etc and I am keen to try a stage race this year, if this is indicative of what type of bike would suit. Also, being 6' 4", I have always been more comfortable on a 29'er.

I had a look at a Specialized Camber Comp Aluminium bike the other day and it really seems lekker, but not sure what else is out there.

Go for it! I have a 2014 Camber and am obviously very biased, but it is a great bike. Excellent parts speccing too! Post a pic once you have taken the plunge and got your baby.

I agree with roboJedi and shawn, The anthem is an awesome duel susser. Give the 650b a ride as well. But just because you tall doesn't mean a 29er will suit you best. I'm 182cm and have all 3 wheel sizes (26=HT, 27.5=duel sus, 29=HT) and I enjoy riding them all. Although I don't often find myself racing the 26er unless its a quick kia night race at modder.

If you ride mainly XC why go dual suspension?

(not trolling)

Thanks for the question. I have been a fan of hard tails since getting one in 2010 and have always been happy with mine, albeit it is very heavy and components aren't the best.

I ride with a group of guys with a mix between fs and ht. I have noticed that I am generally very strong on the uphills, except when they get quite rocky or rough, at which stage the guys with the fs seem to have better traction and are suddenly able to pass me. Also on the downhills, I tend to ride as hard as I can and generally lead until the terrain gets really rough at which stage I lose a bit of traction due to bouncing around a lot.

Not sure if that makes sense. If I am talking ***, happy to hear your opinion as I can't afford to buy a new bike every year and therefore don't want to buy the wrong bike.

I have a Giant Anthem 2013  and a Carbon Camber 2014 I would say for 30K the Giant is better specced and value if you spend  a little more get the Carbon Camber

This can be difficult.. I had a 2013 Giant Anthem X Advanced and the bike was amazing. The new 2015 are well spec and priced comparing to the other brands.

Go ride all of them and see what you are most comfortable on.

(ps. I ride a Epic)
