What to buy

Good morning. This is my first post.

First a bit of background:

I am turning 45 this year, am 1,82m tall and weigh 130kg. My ideal weight would be around 118kg. I have enjoyed mountain biking up to my early 30's, then I married, got kids and lost interest in cycling. My last bike was a Trek 8000, preceded by a Bridgestone MB3.

I now want to buy a new bike and get fit again. This is where I need help. I have stopped cycling before the days of full suspension, disc brakes and bigger wheels.

My budget is at R45k absolute max for the bike. I would prefer to stay below R40k.

My thoughts are full suspension for comfort. On wheel size ( 27.5" or 29") I am flexible. I do lean towards 27.5" though. Aluminium versus Carbon frame is still a mystery. I think the budget would rule out Carbon to a large extent.

My only research so far was on the internet. Bikes I have identified as possibilities are: Trek Fuel EX 8; Giant Reign 2; Cannondale Rush 1; Specialized Stump Jumper FSR Comp Carbon. All are in the R30K range, except the Stump, which is the only Carbon one.

My activity would be XC/ Trail.

I would appreciate any comments that could help me with the decision.

Regards,

Gert

Giant Trance 2015, either the Advanced version (which is carbon) or the Trance 2 with some hectic upgrades.

Brilliant suspension design, bomb-proof warranty and after sales service, and a brilliant bike.

2nd choice would be the stumpy, but I'd go for the Trance simply due to the suspension design and the fact that it's the Trance. Just a brilliant bike.

Gert, probeer van die vloer af 'n fiets koop wat wiele het wat jou gewig sal hanteer sonder enige probleme.

Van die fietse wat jy gelys het, sal ek die Stumpjumper vat - 'n baie gemaklike fiets!

Posted

Get a dual-suspension bike. Much more comfortable than a hard tail.

To quote Banna: "Listen to Mayhem." Trance is a great all-round mtb. There is a 50+ page thread on the hub singing its praises.

You should be able to build a Santa Cruz 5010 Alu or Santa Cruz Bantam (both 650b) within your budget as well. (125mm rear suspension with 120-140mm fork). I saw the female equivalent of the Bantam built up for R43k, without any discount. Bike won't be super light, but will be LOTS of fun on singletrack. (Got my SC 5010 yesterday  and therefore may just be a tad biased towards it).

Pyga 110 (29er) https://www.bikehub.co.za/classifieds/118026-pyga-110-29r-like-new/?st=10#commentsStart (I don't know the seller)

Rocky Mountain Thunderbolt (120mm 650b) and Altitude (130mm travel 29er???) can also be considered. Don't know about pricing. I'm a kortgat at 1.65m and tested a medium Altitude in Jonkershoek - nice trail bike.

...also Giant frames carry a life time warranty... don't know about the rest...

Giant Reign is a great bike - although I think a bit overkill for your needs/riding style. but maybe the extra suspension will help.

Go ride and try a few... consider the cash you got to spend on each though.

I just bought the Specialized epic comp carbon for 45k.

Its an awesome bike.

What i've been told is that when carbon cracks you can fix it and you cant fix aluminium. Carbon also has better shock absorption.

What i've been told is that when carbon cracks you can't fix it really and you can fix aluminium - weld it which is also not recommended. Carbon also has better shock absorption.

there I fixed it.... ;)

If it is broken you are screwed... bottom line.

My agterwereld sal gaandeweg weer ingebreek word.

Ek ry met die agterste suspensie op 280 psi, die voorste op 140 psi en die bande op 40psi. Tans voel dit reg.

Dankie vir al die advies op die forum.

Ek moet ook se, Werner by Bruce Reyneke in Lynwoodweg was baie behulpsaam.

Groete,

Sorry to say but your ideal weight will be something in the 70Kg range. if you want to be a cyclist that is. If you want to play rugby then maybe 118kg is ok....

Just saying.

How do you get to the 118Kg target>>

70kgs?! Then I'll never be a cyclist, or be built like a pencil  :(

I think if you're just riding for fun, then dropping down to 118 would be a good initial goal. Reassess after that.

Lets just say I have played tight head prop all my life, am built kinda like a brick sh1thouse and have weighed 70 kg last in standard 4. I have no aspiration to become a cyclist, only to ride a bike  for enjoyment. That could include riding it quite hard and quite far. One has to work with what one has.
