Giant Anthem X29er?

Great advice.

I would love to get 27.5 for shorter single track rides, but I think if you are aiming to do longer endurance type stuff 29er is the way to go...and it will still handle the tight stuff.....but that Trance does look pretty inviting.

I will keep my 29er for long rides to compare it to the 27.5, but I think the 27.5 will do good in long rides too. If Nino can win Epic stages on 27.5 then its good enough for me  . I think I might climb faster on 27.5, and that is important for long rides.

When I bought my Anthem I had to decide between the 29er and the 27.5. I'm glad I took the big wheels, but if I had to make that decision again, knowing what I know now...I'll propably go with the 27.5.

This is how I see it. I'm pretty sure that I'll climb faster on the smaller wheels and yes the 29er rolls better, but how many races have got those long straights into the sunset? I struggle to keep up to my mate on his 26er, so again.....it's all about the engine.

If I could choose again...I'll take the 27.5

I am hearing this a lot lately. After a couple of seasons on 29ers people are starting to realise that big wheels don't handle everything very well.

I have to chuckle when people ask me how do I Keep up with the 29ers on my 26. I do the Lane stare and stmp on the pedals. Its only about having a properly Tuned engine and the right gearbox

The whole wheel debate... don't think there will ever be a conclusion. At the level that I'm riding the difference between the 27.5 and the 29er won't make that big a difference... IMO.

There is a huge difference between the 26er and 29er though and I'm beaten on the single track by 29ers, 26ers and 27.5 riders. Choosing your line is more important on the big wheels, but oh man do those puppies eat up rolling terrain and the odd flat terrain.

I'm accustomed to the 29er now and will most probably stick to the wheel size unless absolutely convinced of the contrary.

I think it depends on your riding style and terrain as to what you will choose. The Trance is an awesome bike, but riding XC and stage races mostly the Anthem makes more sense now. If you are not trying to break the ribbon going a little slower on the single track won't matter that much... the main thing is to enjoy your ride and be comfortable.... my 2c

I was in disbelieve when Giant stopped making the Trance x 29er. What a machine!

fortunately I got the x1 2013 model, dropper post and all for R22k.

Looking at prices now... bargain

Reading all of the above I think I may also go the Trance 650B route.

Anyone know where I may get the best rice around Cape Town for one?

Cycle Factory in Montague Gardens. Ask for Jacques - tell him I sent you

So I have three choices:

2014 Trance for 24k

2015 Trance 2 for 27k

Dropper post add R 3.5k

Or 2015 Anthem for R30k with dropper included

Which would be best value?

Can afford either.

I think the Trance 2 with dropper or the Anthem with dropper depending on the riding you will be doing.

The 2015 trance doesn't have the OD2 stem/steerer anymore I believe.

I have a 2014 Anthem, 120mm Epicon fork and Giant dropper and love it.

Tough but awesome choice to have to make.........

Good luck

2015 trance 2 with dropper. 500 more than the anthem and a much more capable and confidence inspiring bike. No OD2 steerer, and a better damper from fox. No contest, really...

I do mostly the 50 to 70 km races around town but love doing trails and downhill single track during week. Can the Trance be used on longish race format or too much bouncing about. I come from a Merida Matts HT so no idea of decent bikes. I manage 51 seconds down "the single track" coming down from Blockhouse on the Merida.

Absolutely. The Trance eats everything for breakfast. Stage race? Pah! You mean bitch ride. The maestro suspension platform is just super efficient, and if you want it a bit stiffer out back, flick the switch and hey! But yiu shouldn't need to.

To get back to the OP .We both weigh 100kg .We need all the traction we can get from both wheels and as much as I like the idea of 27,5 ,I think 29 is the way to go .I remember very well the climbs in Groenkloof where I just spun out and lost traction on my 26 'wheels .My latest bike is a 23 inch frame 29er .BIG PEOPLE NEED BIG BIKES !

You need not worry about bouncing about on the Trance. At worst just add some air to your suspension or race in "climb" mode and you'll be more than fine.

Go with the 2015 Trance 2 and add the dropper, then prepare to thrash those 50 seconds.
