Tokai - Group Ride 28 Jan 2015

HI Guys,

A coupe of mates and I are going for a little spin in Tokai tomorrow afternoon from 17h30 or so. The plan is to ride up to the top of Vasbyt / DH2 / DH1 or wherever, and ride the singletrack as much as possible...

The invitation is there, and it is open. I'd like to get as many people on the mountain as possible.

By the way - If, for whatever reason, there are joggers on the trails then just please remain calm and direct them to the closest jeep track.

EDIT - As Deon says, the current agreement has been over-ruled by Parks, so there is no usage of singletrack at this time...

This could be fun...

I will be there with Ben a little earlier, will see if we can stick around longer than normal (I might just drag out my traditional collapse on reaching level 4 for a bit longer than usual).

Fixed..

The agreement with the Wednesday trail runners was just that, an agreement between two user groups. I think this agreement has been overruled recently by the landowner.

The organiser should have more detail, so best advise the runners to check with them what the terms are.

To the best of your knowledge what has the landowner stated is or isn't allowed?

There was an agreement in place that the runners should not be excluded completely from singletrack, listing the three green trails in the OP as safe, shared trails.

This was not an official TMNP agreement but they were included in the outcome of the meeting, keeping them informed that an understanding between TokaiMTB and TnT had been reached.

    :offtopic:  ^_^

Okay.

It would be interesting to know where TMNP stand on the safety aspect of shared trails and how they would react to an injury caused by the sharing.

I saw the same thing. Most of them friendly and greeted back. Didn't see more than a group of 2 at a time.

Most of them are fine, it's when there are a lot of them a pack mentality seems to emerge (as with any large group I suppose).

I always try and go out of my way to greet them and the other user groups too, every little helps, and for the most part you get a friendly response.

They do take mtb advice into definite consideration but there is no arguing that that the vegetation growth height is making the historical Tokai bi-directional, multi-user trails more of a hazard to share.

Soon Vasbyt will need mtb trail direction reevaluated, it's just getting too tricky to keep it bi-direction as the bush is now even cancelling out oncoming noise.. and riders just keep getting faster!

Brembo mtb brakes anyone?

And Vasbyt is a very good indicator of how all the trails will eventually be when the trees are gone.

It can be dodgy when you round a corner and find a slower rider in front of you never mind a rider/runner coming the other way. We really do need to be aware of what is around us on there - on Sunday I had to drop anchor suddenly (while on my ongoing quest to get just a little closer to Ben's times) when we ran across a family with really small kids riding down Vasbyt (luckily we caught them at the open section at the fire road). I'm not complaining by the way, it was great to see a whole family enjoying the trails and the grins on the faces of the two little girls lit up the day. But we do need to be aware that not everybody is on there trying to shave half a second off their best time, some are there to ride slowly and enjoy the place.
