Awesome...sounds like my brother in law. Rides a giant xtc 2002 (I think) with v brakes . Doesn't care just rides the same routes as every one else and enjoys himself. It's refreshing to be around him. Good read ????

Cool story, we get so wrapped up in rubbish. Get out there have fun, breathe in the clean air and smile.

So I am left wondering did you ride on Sunday. And I now want a pancake

We did indeed do the Sunday ride and the customary pancake feast was in full swing but alas the pretty blonde was not in attendance helping her folks at the kiosk. If only they knew what a positive impact she has on their sales especially from Red. If her little white Mini is parked under the trees as we pass the ablutions Red doesn't even ask if we should stop, he just turns off and orders pancakes for everybody, if we want them or not.

I have just realised why your buddy selects you for the long stage stuff........if your verbal skills are as good as your writing skills........HTFU is not in play. You will be able to sweet talk any hill climb into a flat section with images of young mademoiselle (ma-dit-is-mooi-helle) providing oasis of relief and enjoyment.

Can a noob qualify to ride with........of the Buffalo category??

Thanks for an entertaining account of what a lot of us MTB stage race junkies go through in training! Based in the East I don't get to ride enough of the PTA and surrounds MTB trails!

I rode Big Red Barn with my 13 year old son last year and was impressed with the single track and post ride food facilities ( I think they had pancakes on the menu ). I look forward to trying out Wolvespruit and Groenkloof sometime this year!

Just to let you know we had a great 'pancake ride' along the Spruit at the end of last year, due to the fact that I have a few buddies who ride the Spruit quite often. There is a little café in Delta Park that makes a killer peanut butter pancake and a decent coffee, and is gaining popularity with MTBer's. Definitely worth a visit.

Gerry let me know when you want to ride Groenkloof.  Geoff, The Boss and I are keen to go back there.

With the amount of pancakes going around we are all in the Buffalo category. As for a ride your assumptions are not quite correct Red needs me to get him fit simply because my lack of talent forces me to train harder and longer so all he does is latch on to my schedule. As soon as he's fit he kicks my butt and the roles are reversed and I have no time to talk. But I'm always looking for company on a ride, so you're welcome, but there are some things you need to consider before you commit. You will be subjected to my latest theory on training techniques, none of them work but that matters not you will hear them, as a tip Red has learnt to nod sagely. I fancy myself as a great trail mechanic, the truth is I barely get by but I have never not finished a race due to a mechanical. The problem is, I have a tendency to stop and try to help whenever I see a fellow rider with a mechanical, Red has threatened to klap me if I do it again. And do not expect any stories from me on the ride I have to concentrate to not fall off but the quiet time that you will experience from me on the climbs is where I think up all the crap I write afterwards.

Oh yes another thing if it the trail is marked Black we have to ride it, this often leads to walking.
