I am looking to spend about R35000 on a new bike. I was thinking hard tail. My other option is a lower spec'd dual sus such as the momsen vipa ac. I ride mostly trails and like to rough stuff. Any suggestions /comments or if any one can point me to a good resource for 2015 bike reviews?

Upgrading from a momsen AL429 (2014) by the way.

for 35k you can get:

2015 trance 2 and upgrade a fair amount of stuff

Camber

Rocky Mountain Altitude

Rocky Mountain Instinct

Rocky Mountain Thunderbolt

All of which are FANTASTIC full sussers and will serve you FAR better than a hardtail if you like the rough stuff.

Just my 10c

All my mates that I ride with are pushing me towards a hard tail. We actually do a fair bit of riding on district roads between the single track. Our average rides are 25-40km with at least 600-800m of climbing. I also just felt that going hard tail would give me a better spec'd bike for the price. I was thinking hard tail now while i am still young (relatively) and then dual sus in about five years or so.

I do have a preference for 29er btw.

with R35k at my disposal I wouldnt buy a complete bike out the box that is model year specific, you get parts you dont necessarily want and it dates in 6 months when the MY16 stuff comes out.

Have fun and enjoy piecing together your 'dream' bike.

If you're looking a 29er then Hard Tail is a pretty good option.

As far as hartails goes there s not a lot of difference between the different brands.

The GT zaskar is pretty goos as is the GIANT XTC Advanced. I think the XT specced  bike is about R38k but its 650B. In a 17" size the wheel size is not going to gain you much.

The Rocky Mountain Vertex is awesome but quite a bit out of the 35K price range.

Shop around and see whats available in that price range and fits you. Then come back and ask for opinions on ride quality.

All you're going to get now is people telling you to get what they ride.

the only one id buy out the box is  the Giant XTC advanced

but as rock mentioned, why not buy the part you want and put together your ultimate bike ?

I took my Giant XTC 0 - carbon yesterday on its first XC outing with some very rocky terrain for 52km, was very impressed and didnt suffer too much fatigue from the lack of rear suspension. I did however buy it only for XC racing.

For R35k, you can get a spaz epic alu, which is a very good dual sus bike that climbs as well as a HT tho
