Hate on the Spruit...

Hate on the Spruit all you want but this weekend I was pleasantly surprised.

Myself and another hubber rested our bikes and went "under cover" as dog walkers. The 2 hounds in question had never been to any park as busy as Delta and had never been around cyclists (and horses) before, so their trail etiquette was a little lacking...

BUT I must say I was VERY impressed with the politeness, patience and general courtesy afforded to us by the cyclists. Yes there was the occasional stravassole, but 99% were freindly and pleasant to people they never knew were cyclists.

So all this "3 riders never greated me on my training ride this morning", or "I got a flat and the people who stopped never had 27.5x2.4" tubes with them, only 29" sort of whinging is the exception.

The Spruit is still a pretty darn friendly place to turn some cranks!

Gees, and here I thought that this would be a handbag slinging contest with maybe some Cape Townian Riders moving to Jozi and causing K@K at the Spruit...  :whistling:

All the pricks were at NF on Sat. Ok, a bit harsh - one in particular that I heard about. :P

I missed the incident but the guy in question stopped and completely blocked the trail and then inexplicably refused to move out of the way even when asked politely to do so numerous times. He then later refused to move out of the way when there was ample space to move left and made a snarky comment to the overtaker when he eventually found a gap to pass.

The general consensus amongst the riders who came into contact with him was that he must be a taxi driver.

Anyway, glad to hear spruit was dick-free.

As a complete noob I cycled the spruit upstream from Ballyclare to Emmerentia yesterday. It was crazy busy but all the other cyclists I met were polite and helpful.

There was one dude who sat silently on my back wheel for a while; it took my girlfriend calling out from behind me for me to realise he was there. A half second of free-wheel would have worked as a bell...

Anyway; I was pleasantly surprised and will certainly be doing that route more often. Like OP says; annoyances are the exception rather than the rule.

Shout "FOR" then hit him with a golf club. He is not quite up to speed with MTB etiquette. It takes some longer than others.

Anyway nice to hear positive stuff from the Spruit. It's an urban legend I tell you
