Ironman 70.3 Durban

Quick question, I'm doing the Jock Cycle Tour 2 weeks before this, good/bad idea attempting this? My running should be ok by then, waiting for hockey season to start to get back in the swing of things and will maintain the training I'm doing for the Midmar. I just don't know if I will be recovered in time for the 70.3?

Two things:

  1. Firstly, I hardly would call entering after 2 April 'late registration'. R3500 entry fee is really ridiculous for a 70.3 event.
  2. Secondly, to come in and copy TriRock Durban's race lacks imagination and is decidedly poor ethics. Why go after someone else's cake that they have invested their money in developing rather than go and bake your own cake somewhere else. I am stunned that TSA have endorsed this event.

As a raving fan of IM South Africa, I am quite disappointed.

Dave I must concur...

As this came out I thought of what this would mean for Tri Rock? Yes Tri Rock had some teething issues BUT the event itself and route etc was really enjoyable.

There is NO WAY two half iron distances 2 months apart will work in Durban.

Initial reaction from colleagues in the office is that they cannot believe the cost of the event

I will do TriRock again this year. Last years race was fantastic. It has a different feel to IMSA events which is great. I will also do EL and PE again but not Dbn 70.3.

EL and PE get that special Ironman vibe because is overwhelms a small town. It is a big deal to the residents. Durban is too big. The convention centre draws more visitors almost every week than any triathlon.

Hi Dave ... not arguing but

1. Its IRON MAN (add costs for the brand) and I suspect it is inline with iron man entries world wide.

2a. Do you know the route, who says its the same as Trirocks...currently the IM page says the route is still to be announced....

2b. South Africa has zillions of mtb stage races and other mtb races which seem to manage ok, and yes there are more mtbkers than 70.3 triathletes but maybe the tri fraternity fraternity can still sustain another 70.3?

R2500 early reg

R3500 late reg

!!!

YOu know , I thought with the arrival of Standard Bank as headline sponsor the costs would be subsidized and cheaper to us , the competitors that make the events possible....but no...the cost has increased and is substantially more than Tri Rock....

my mathematically challenged brain cannot compute this, its almost as if we are promoting standard bank and sponsors with our hard earned cash. they get the mileage out of this.

If anything their arrival has made the 70.3 East London bags and medals look worse...

This is a for profit business, and as long as they sell out, they will milk the cash cow. But there comes a tipping point - R3500 for a six hour race? +-R600 per hour. It starts to make you consider other choices. I think my first one in 2010 cost R1500. In fact the 2010 full IMSA was about that. Now having done a few, it just seems to be stretching the elastic a little far.

But, it is their business, they can do what they like. I am sure they will get lots of entrants.

As for my assumption on the TriRock course, I recall it being mentioned that M4 is the cycle route. I cannot think of any other viable route for the cycle. Besides the M4 is newly tarred and so smoooooooth....if they find another cycle route, great for them and I will eat my words.

Anyone know if there will even be a TRIROCK 2015? I cant find it advertised on the web.

Or has 70.3 hijacked it completely off the Calendar?

I think u right on both accounts, don't really see where else they could cycle unless they get 100% road closure

Anyone know where the transition will be, Ushaka or further up towards north beach like the old days?

If Durban is as well organized as the East London event (barring the expo which was lacking in substance) it is worth every penny.

The race is a logistical miracle. Profits due for work put in.

Logistical miracle when another company (Tri Rock) has pulled it off two years in a row?
