Flat or clipless?

Clipless does not make you faster.

Clipless does not increase your cadence.

Clipless does not give you more power.

Clipless is more secure but so is your fall and you fail to unclip.

Flats allow you to position your feet better.

This allows you to use your muscles more efficiently.

Forward for uphill and steep downhill - back for flat and fast - inside foot off in a tight corner.

It is actually a pointless discussion if you have not given both a proper go (no not just one or two rides). It's like the dropper debate. Would you use a dropper on a xc bike?

I'd actually liken it to driving with an automatic vs manual. Cleats are auto, flats manual. With the manual, you have to learn how and when to change, what the car does at higher revs and how it'll behave in given conditions in certain gears.

It's my analogy Myles so don't quote mine if you want to state your own.

Besides pedals have f'all to do with gearboxes.

I used to be on clipless for a long time, I made the switch to flats last year and it's great.

-adds more confidence

-you have to ride with better technique

-easier to jump off the bike if you bail

Definitely buy Some decent shoes and pedals. Diald Bikes has some decent pedals, they also stock Five tens, but you could use some hiking shoes with vibram soles or similar. Some guys use skate shoes like DC, Vans and Globe. I use my Vans shoes with my flats when commuting.

It's got to do with learning how to drive a car... Auto is a crutch, as are cleats. Safety belts are a safety component, which in the cycling world would be helmets, pads and so on. I just don't think it's a valid analogy, which is why I quoted you.

BTW - who pissed on your batteries? Seriously now... why are you so acidic all of a sudden?

I'm not talking racing I'm talking control.

I believe Greg minaar has always been on clipless as have many other dh pros.

Yeah, he has for his whole professional career, whilst racing. He rides flats when riding and training...

Both analogies are a bit crap really  :D

But seriously whats up? You seem to be on the warpath lately.

Clipless does not make you faster....No it doesn't but allows you to spread the fatigue on muscles

Clipless does not increase your cadence....increase no, maintain higher cadence YES

Clipless does not give you more power....no it doesnt...helping you transfer x power your legs generate to the pedals more efficiently...YES

Clipless is more secure but so is your fall and you fail to unclip....Dont fall

Flats allow you to position your feet better....you can move cleats as well as adjust float on certain clipless models if you want a bit of "freedom"

This allows you to use your muscles more efficiently....efficiency according to me is using both the down and upstroke of your leg to generate power that goes to the pedals. Only using the downstroke isn't efficient. I would hate to try and do MMP test with flats...actually it will be scary.

.....

mmmmmm

And secondly... remember that riding and racing are 2 diifferent things (something hard for us South Africans to differentiate between. We tend to think that unless you're racing or training for a race, you're wasting your time).

Exactly this.

Sooo this makes me wonder when we going to see those who take their riding racing seriously following the new flats are more efficient trend....

I ride a 26er with flats. I also have never rode anything else so I can't talk but I am faster than at least 3 other people all riding cleats. This is especially evident on twisty singletrack and over rough ground. Yes I have some shin scars but I kind of like them. I share the opinion that if the guys riding rampage can do that crazy stuff on flats then the debate around security on technical terrain is moot and I'm not all that serious as a racer I just want to develop mad skills so that I can really get a kick out of singletrack and the occasional obstacle. Some days I consider clipless and then I realise I'm still saving for a dropper post.

Don't hold your breath swiss....

I will give it this much...its way cooler. I mean walking on your heals and slipping and sliding at the trailhead's cobra polished floor isn't cool...especially in lycra

So, yea.....credit where its due

LOL. I used to do that.

But, part of the charm of cleats is the ability to spontaneously break out into a never-before-seen style of tap-dance.

I would pay good money to see you do that.

I can just see the grand tours this year

Contador and Co will be riding flats disguised to look like clipless (so the others don't see their secret trick) riding on their toes on the way up, on the midfoot on the way down and in between for the other occasions.

Wait, here's a better plan:

An adjustable cleat that clips in but allows you to slide your foot backwards and forwards at the press of a button!!

Brilliant!!!

Wait

What about when you fall?? ^_^

Ah shite back to the drawing board
