Keep my mixed bag or "upgrade"

Hey guys.

I recently bought a used hardly used hardtail that's been giving me some issues. It's 2013 Scott Scale 940, but the components are all pretty entry level stuff. I've been considering trading in on a new Momsen with slightly better components, but unsure if I should rather just spend money on upgrading components on the Scott. Current components on the Scale off the top of my head:

 

Suntour XCM front fork

Alex 21 rims

Rocket Ron's front and rear

Specialized XC bars

Specialized stem

Syncros seat post

Specialized Chicane seat

Deore cranks

Wellgo pedals

X9 shifters

X9 rear derailleur

SLX fron derailleur

Avid Exilir 5 (I'd like to call them) brakes (but can't)

 

I like the weight and geometry of the frame and I have a lot of fun riding it, but I've had nonstop issues with clicking, scraping gears (which the LBS have been unable to solve) Grinding cranks, trouble shifting, squeals from front brakes and lock up on front wheel causing a massive OTB and bent rear derailleur. As much as I love the frame, I've lost confidence in it.

 

Would it be worth my while to trade it in on a Momsen AL329 or AL429 and paying in the difference or should I try flog the current components and upgrade those rather? Items I'd like to look into is fork, crank and rear derailleur 

 

You're advice would be appreciated

Learn how to service  the said stuff.

Learn how to ride your bike smoothly.

 

When you get it all together - get what you consider to be a better bike.

Don't stress about not having the latest and best.

 

Btw my Avid WORK and I will not be replacing them.

Ask the real bike mechanics about Avids.

I have a Scale Elite (2012 version of the 940). All bikes will eventually require maintanence / raplacement of parts, especially in the drive train - which is usually the sqeaky / noisy part. The only thing that ever "broke" was the DT Cheese rims - which I wrote off each separately last year. I've swopped the bar for a wider one, changed to 1x10 - and man, I'm having fun with it now!

 

Btw my Avid WORK and I will not be replacing them.

Ask the real bike mechanics about Avids.

 

My Avids also work. They had some problems, but nothing a good bleed couldn't fix. I understand them and they understand me!

Upgrading to a new bike with "slightly" better components doesn't make any sense. And it doesn't sound like any of your issues are with the frame. 

 

Researching and finding the correct parts can be a lot of fun. (If you are into that sort of thing.)

 

If you upgrade to significantly better parts over time, you'll end up with a great bike where you literally only have to upgrade the frame a year or two down the line. ( You'll probably get the full sus itch some time in the future anyway!)

 

You should only buy a whole new bike once, and upgrade forever...Unless you change wheel sizes. Then you'll probably get better value from a new bike. OR if you suddenly get the urge to do a significant upgrade and drop money on a 100K bike.  :eek:

 

Try CRC or the classifieds here on the HUB. There are great deals out there on SLX and XT parts.

That Scott is a very good frame. I'd keep it and upgrade the bits over time.

 

Plus, without spending mega bucks you won't be able to upgrade over what you have at the moment.

 

My suggestion would be to take advantage of the buycycle / easybike / cwc / EVO specials on some slx and xt stuff, get a set of deore brakes (which are stupid value at the moment) get a second hand Reba fork and a good set of wheels.

 

That Scott frame is, IMO, better than the momsen. It's won quite a few awards in international publications and isn't exposed to the same problems that the full suss xc Scott is encountering.

 

Plus the al329 whilst being a good bike is more entry level than the Scott and you'll actually be buying the same or worse components on there.

 

 

alternatively take the bike to a reputable lbs (aask here for recommendations) so that they can set it uo properly.

 

You say you've got a bent rd at the moment so chances you'll have to change that out anyway...

Thanks for the advice guys, guess I'll keep it then and rather find a new LBS.

 

As for my Avids, they are terrible. They have been bled, but so much fade that barreling downhill is much scarier than it should be.

Don't blame the Avids - not a peep from them and rock solid when needed - fade means not bled properly

Oh for sure, my LBS is crap, but fade can also be caused by heat build up, which I'm sure is the case here. I'll have them bled by a different LBS to make sure though

Nothing wrong with an X9 rear derailleur. Have one on my wife's 2004 Scalpel with flexible chain stays. Only had to set the gears twice since buying the bike.

 

Rather consider small changes: wider bars, shorter stem, tyres. I went from Kenda slant 6-s to Onza (Ibex front, Canis rear) on my previous bike and the change transformed it. (Can't comment on Rocket Rons as never used it.)

 

No issues with avid brakes either, actually carried my XOs over from my previous bikes to new one.

No issue with the Derailleur other than bending it from my tumble. My X9 components, frame and seat are my favourite parts of the bike. The grinding crank, mushy suspension, poor brakes(to be confirmed) and heavy rims, that's where my issues lie

 

Maybe I've got gas and can't afford to buy new components :(
