I have not had the privilege of riding Tokai. I usually stick to the trails around Tybergberg MTB club. Now, with all the new eventualities, should I even bother, or should I get a ride in before it all goes to hell in a handbasket? I have only been living in CT for just over two years now.

After one ride, you will fall in love with Tokai. Two years in CT and not been to Tokai - you're missing big time.

Karl, I have been riding in Tokai for 2 years and I think I am going to be getting a Tygerberg membership soon. I appreciate the admin and work the guys at Tokai have put in but they are hamstrung by all the bureaucratic red tape!

Grab the chance now, but bear in mind it's better over weekends as the logging stops and all the routes open up.

Thanks for the info. Due to work I can only ride on weekends as it stands. Perhaps I will give it a go this weekend since I have been doing waaaayyy too much road training for the Cycle Tour, and I am starting to suffer withdrawal symptoms from single track. I miss the smell of dirt. Happy times await.

Tygerberg has some fantastic trails, and a huge variety as well, from easy peasy to downright scary. For R590.00 per year for a solo membership, you seriously can't go wrong. And the best is the vibe is laid back on ALL the trails. Hence my reason for not really venturing out beyond my local haunt, besides Bottelary hills and Lourensford last year.

I'm a Tygerberg mtb member as well - where are the scary sections - only done Meerendal, Bloemendal, Hillcrest thus far. I need to know to avoid the scary sections

Okay Bloukrans, your mission if you choose to accept is to ride the Bloemendaaler which is not very scary, but pretty technical on the switchbacks ( read sharp and steep ), and then go do Hoogekraal's notorious and infamous Cobra...just first walk the cobra bottom section before riding... :excl:

[edit] - Actually, do a lap from Hillcrest including the Bloemendaaler, cross back for a lap over Contermanskloof and then hop over to Hoogekraal. Remember to bring your climbing legs, btw.

My only problem at the moment is convincing a couple of a my riding buddies to take the hit and get a membership - I don't want to be riding out that way alone. Are there any group rides out that way which cater for the beginner/intermediate?

Hi Cookie - check the vleisboek page "MTB why riding alone" or something like that and Tygerberg MTB vleisboek.

I used to ride Tokai 15 years ago. That was epic. Until they chopped down the forest on the top saddle section. Never been back since. Starting to cycle again with my 13yo son. Will prob take him there some time, but Tygerberg for us at the mo...
