Hi All

So I'm new to riding. I bought my MTB last year December and was hooked after my first trail ride (regardless of how disastrous it was).

When I bought my bike I decided to get only the essentials i.e. helmet, gloves and bib because I didn't want to spend too much in case the bug didn't bite me.

I need some advise now on what gear / clothing / accessories I should get next. I have been itching to by a camelbak pack but I don't know if I should rather first buy myself some cleats (I've been given a pair of second hand pedals) or, with winter coming in, get some decent winter clothes.

Also what is everyone's opinion of Mr Price maxed clothing? When I bought my bib I went for a pair from my LBS but for everything else what about getting some cheap clothing from Mr Price for now and upgrade them as I get the cash.

What does everyone thing. I personally wish I could whip out the CC and buy everything at once!

I buy Mr Price shirts the maxed ones that arnt splashed with labling. I like them I have Craft stuff aswell and for me no difference. I have a jacket from craft that is incredible. As for bibs even the Mr price stuff costs so rather get something decent. Camelback is nice but only if you use it. I use my Hydration pack on every ride not starting at home (cant fit a saddlebag). My track pump and tubeless tires are likely first thing ill recommend however. Tubeless is a dream once it works.

when your due for some new rubber then get your lbs to do the tubeless conversion for you, if they are any good you'll be in and out in 15 min. I use my 2.0l camelback all the time and pack it with tools / repair kits. Other stuff i've found useful is a couple of CO2 bombs, a foot pump in the car boot, bike rack...ok I'll stop there but you might want to put a wishlist out around birthday / xmas time.

Yes tubeless conversion I'll do when I need to replace my current tyres. I've already had a few punctures so I'd love to get away from struggling with repair kits.

Also the bike rack was on the top of my list of purchases. Just for easy of transport.

I'll go take a look at the Mr P stuff, hopefully they have something good.

Where should I put the cleats in the list of my priorities?

If you aren't going with tubeless right away, put some slime in your tubes. I did that and have been riding on them for more than 8 months without a single puncture.

As for winter kit, I did 2 rides in winter last year after buying all the kit......and then it was too hot, only really must for winter is a jacket or some arm and leg warmers, so not too expensive. As for camelback, I go through water like a dehydrated sponge so for me it's a must. Have a look at the one below, nice price.

Cleats, that depends. The shoes are an investment, you will fall, only question is how much and how hard, there are also only people who have forgot to unclip and those who will. But are they worth it. For me yes, I shortcutted a bit because I never felt safe not clipped in so struggled with confidence. Now I'm confident but will put on some flats soon to work on those skills I missed.

Keep an eye out at Sportsmans Warehouse, they often have deals / specials on cycling kit and the First Ascent stuff is well priced for training gear.

Welcome kt71t508

Clipping in is probably the most expensive 'upgrade' on your list.

You going to need shoes to start off with. Its an option I suggest exploring later.

I would focus on getting an extra riding shorts or bib and a vest.

They smell like snoek after every ride so a fresh set always comes in handy.

Don't get too hung up on cycling specific vests.

Most of them are basicly running vests with pockets and a zip anyways.

Running vests are cheaper.

And unlike many cycling vests. They don't resemble a website without the popup blocker enabled. I like Reebok's PlayDry Zigtech range for winter (running apparel)

A cheaper, durable, breathable alternative to expensive cycling apparel.

My rain vest/windbreaker is also very light so its able roll up and fit in my camelback.

Thanks everyone for your input. I'll check out the running vests to see what's good. Also def need to take a look at a nice hydration pack for water and emergency tools.

Thanks Vangar for the heads up on the Dakine packs. They look decent and at a low price.

Don't buy anything from Mr Price, you'll do one ride with it and that stick will never wash out of those tops.

I assume you mean stink. Don't know about Mr Price stuff but that applies to First Ascent tops. Jeez those things hone.

I personally would not recommend getting a Camelbak - rather have a water bottle or 2 (if your bike can fit 2). I ride with water bottles and a small seatpost bag - never needed anything more. On long rides I generally fill up where possible.

Nothing so nice as a good fitting shirt.

Shoes and cleats is a must and you'll see your cycling improve when you start getting used to it....

As for winter clothing.  I am a  HUGE fan.  I hate the cold.

If I am warm, I train.  So most of my fellow mates don't ride as much in winter so I come out a little stronger in Spring........which is really nice.

Good fitting helmet with lots of vents and light........it will put a smile on your face every time!

Good luck and remember to enjoy.

80% of the thrill is in the chase..... ;)
