Cyclist Down - Non Fatal

We have just heard that a young UCT cyclist was knocked down on Victoria Road, near the Ambassador Hotel in Bantry Bay at about 5.50 am this morning. The following report from a fellow cyclist tells the story:

"Despite a bit of concussion he is okay, although his carbon bike had a snapped seat stay and seat tube and the car was a mess as he smashed the windscreen and rolled off the bonnet. Not cool and could have been so much worse if it were a bigger car or a truck.

Before the speculation and motorist-bashing goes wild: The cyclist was 100% in the wrong here.

It was dark and our usual crew of about 20-strong was traveling towards Camps Bay. A few others were riding to join us and traveling in the opposite direction (from Camps Bay towards town). As we drew level [with the second group], the cyclist made a sudden U-turn without looking behind him and collided with a car traveling in the same direction as him.

Moral of the story: Think and don't be daft.”

Almost a Darwin Award candidate. Glad he's not dead or paralysed, but seriously, after the last couple of weeks with the deaths (almost wrote dearth, which it clearly is not!) of a number cyclists on the roads, one would hope riders would be more vigilant and considerate.

This guy is a mate of mine. To be fare he was part of a group that was making a U-turn as so he thought it was safe. He is okay just a compression fracture in his lower spine. He aims to be back on the bike in a week. I think all this stuff about being daft is a bit unfair, we all make mistakes. I mean hes a clever guy. Studying engineering at UCT so I think calling him a Darwin case is a bit harsh. I mean give him a break he is still in Hospital. I think it was completely wrong of PPA to wright about him like this as well without getting the full story and his side of it.

Rant off.

Hope he is okay.

But for the future being intelligent does not go hand in hand with common sense, and someone there displayed a monumental lack of common sense.

personally i think it's important for any incident to be reported to the cycling community, fatal or not. transparency and openness regarding such incidents is vital.

the more we're aware about all incidents the better.

U Turns are dangerous whether you look or not, especially on the road. I have been in a near collision because I wanted to turn around and the car was approaching quicker than I anticipated, yes my fault.

Still, mistakes happen and sometimes we get lucky. Glad the rider is OK and for sure gonna be a better cyclist because of it.

You are only DAFT if you make the same mistake twice!

We have many daft engineers in this country. Many don't make the grade but they work through the system. I've mentored a few in my time. Wish I could take their degrees away

Your attempt at exculpation would suggest that labelling him as a Darwin Award candidate is extremely generous.

I think the people who made the statement did it in the manner they did because they need to be seen as anti silly cycling as much as pro safe cycling, especially considering the view motorist have of cyclist.
