Fast rolling but strong tyres needed

Hi,

I am looking for MTB 29er tyres that are fast rolling but are strong as well. i don't want to puncture every 5 minutes, especially when going over rocks. I will be purchasing Mavic crossmax SL tubesless wheels.

What would you guys suggest? I doesn't have to be Specialized.

I was thinking of going with the 2 models but read too many negative reviews on them, the first getting alot of punctures:

  • S-WORKS GROUND CONTROL 2BLISS READY
  • FAST TRAK CONTROL 2BLISS READY

I'm not a pro but I just want to ride faster, I currently use the Specialized ground control tyres but I feel there might be alot of drag.

I ride a lot of trail that consists of rocky sections, singletrack and long gravel roads.

Thanks

Brendan

Conti race king !

I ride a lot of trail that consists of rocky sections, singletrack and long gravel roads. How are these tyres when it comes to grip and strength against punctures from rocks and uneven surfaces and bumpy gravel roads?

Racing Ralph Snakeskin rear 2.25", 2015 Nobby Nic Snakeskin 2.35" front.

This combination fast? Why 2 different makes and width?

Narrower tyres are said to have less drag. So a 2.25 is sufficient for rear without compromising grip etc in the rocky sections etc

While the front is wider to give you more grip and control.

the different make is actually the model...

Both from Schwalbe - Racing Ralph Snakeskin rear 2.25" (fast rolling high grip XC tyre), 2015 Nobby Nic Snakeskin 2.35" front. (High grip rougher tread XC front or AM rear tyre)

Snakeskin refers to the casing being reinforced with a tough layer.

Specialised also do a tyre with a reinforced sidewall, called Grid, so you can get a Fast Track Grid, or GroundControl Grid etc. 2.3 front, 2.1 back.

Thanks. With the increased grip and control how much of the speed and fast rolling is being sacraficed? Will this combination still offer speed? How much drag? I've got ground control tyres but it feels like I have loads of drag.

I have a Nobby Nic front, and Maxxis Crossmark rear.

I am not concerned with the added weight of the crossmark, since I know that the sidewall is one of the toughest.

Crossmark rolls very good, and no issues with cornering. Nobby Nic in front is awesome, plenty grip, but, what is actually surprising, is that it also has a very low rolling resistance.

I run

Front - Nobby Nic 2.25 Snakeskin EVO

Rear -  Racing Ralph 2.25 Snakeskin EVO

My wife prefers

Front - Conti Mountainking 2.2 Protection

Rear - Conti Race king 2.2 Protection

We live in a rocky area and both combinations work well. We do all our races with these combinations from Jhb2C to XC races

The Contis do have a longer life span

I don't want to jinx myself or them - but running the fast track 2.0 front, renegade 1.95 rear.

Both control versions and had no problems up till now.

I'm always interested to find out how much faster "light" and "fast rolling" tyres are...

The op refers to tyres "feel" like they are dragging...I sometimes stop to check of my rear brake is not binding, but it ends up being my legs screaming from too many black labels the night before....

Speed?

That's the best Spez combo for good grip, rolling resistance and strong sidewalls.

I run Ground Control 2.1 front and back and ride anywhere, Rock gardens, corrugated roads, single track (loose and hard pack).

All depends how hard you want to go. I'll be getting a 2.3 GC for my front soon soon...hopefully they have the Grid version on stock by then.

What is the combo that you refer to?

Do you have the ground control or the S works ground control?

So you are going to keep it at 2.1 at the back but just change it to 2.3 in the front?

Doesn't the grid have more drag on them?
