Chain length question

I've just changed my crank from an XTR 40/28 to an XTR 38/26. Can anyone advise how many links need to be removed from the chain? Is there a quick answer to this, or should one use the standard chain length measuring method?

Many thanks.

Put your existing chain on and with the bike on a stand check the RD when on smallest gears front and back.  The chain should not hang slack or touch itself at the jockey wheel.  Then shift to the large and large gear and the RD should not be stretched too far forward.  You should be able to push it a bit further forward by hand.   If you have a cassette with a wide high to low ratio you may find that the chain is not at its optimum at one or other end of its range.  You must then decide the end of the range you are most likely to ride in and cut the chain accordingly.  Make a mental note not to ride at the other end.

easy way is to put chain on big ring front and back. Then check the overlap is at least 3 rings. You could getaway with 2 or one overlap, but as far as I know 3 is ideal
