I drove up fox hill yesterday on my way back from Jhb. In a car, it seems like the M19 is a tougher climb compared to fox hill. How does these compare on a bike ?

Off course you will. It's only exactly 14.3km from the start to the top of FOX HILL of which around exactly 12.8km is solid climbing. It is only a tough climb if you are racing beyond your capability. Ease into it. Soon after Fox you will be on the Comrades route and that is truly a lot of fun. Climbing Inchanga and Botha's isn't that bad. Careful around Westville, there are three short and steepish climbs that can pose a surprise. Then it is seatbelts on for the decent right up to 45th Cutting. Small bump there and then a downhill run to  the bottom of Jan Smuts. Left turn contra flow to Tollgate Bridge. Bruce Fordyce once claimed that this 160 meter little hill when you turn left is the steepest on the entire Comrades route. Now is the time to phone the family at the finish. Tell them to take out the coldest beer from the cooler, you are almost there. Hope you enjoy your race.

Climbing Inchanga, Drummond, Alverston and Botha's isn't that bad. Careful around Westville Hillcrest, there are three short and steepish climbs that can pose a surprise. Then it is seatbelts on for the descent right up to 45th Cutting. Small bump here & there (Kloof, Westville & 45th) and then a downhill run to  the bottom of Jan Smuts. Left turn contra flow to Tollgate Bridge (get in the right gear early here - its a very sharp 90 degree corner under heavy breaking and a short sharp hill up the off ramp onto the N3 that the bunch will accelerate on and don't underestimate the little climb up to tollgate bridge on tired legs)  . Bruce Fordyce once claimed that this 160 meter little hill when you turn left is the steepest on the entire Comrades route. Now is the time to phone the family at the finish. Tell them to take out the coldest beer from the cooler, you are almost there. Watch out for pedestrians on the run through town - they'll be hopping the barriers !! Hope you enjoy your race.

Vivek, similar to that uphill at the end of Quality street going up Marine drive towards the Recce base. Just much longer, but nothing backbreaking at all. In length the same as M19 but not as steep.

I'm catching the 6:00am bus from Suncoast Casino to the start, does the parking area and surrounding roads get very busy there that early so we have to give ourselves a lot of time beforehand or are things still nice and quiet?

I parked at Suncoast last year and it was a pleasure. No fuss or traffic. The challenge is getting out of Suncoast after the race which is a little hectic for an hour or so.

Do they have buses leaving Suncoast at different times throughout the morning or just 1 at 6?  I was considering it but would hate to be waiting an hour for my 7:57 time if they get in at 7am.

Thanks man!!

They have 3 busses, starting at 5 but I think you had to book it already...

What can you Compare fox hill to in jozi or durban? Although I grew up there iv never done the shova but many a race in jozi...like riding up fields hill or worse?

Nothing compares..haha.. check this little comparison I did with a ride I did over the weekend here in the Cradle...total accent was about 1134m

Pay careful attention to the elevation bar on the left. Ours (only 1300m-1550m) with one continuous climb about 150m in total and Amashova 1st up is just over 300m (with elevation obviously from 0m - 950m).

.

The hill out the back of the cradle past sterkfontein hospital is 342m accent in about 7 ks, have a crack at that if you want more climbing.

Also from CL fairways to lion park and back is about 1200m climbing over 74 ks. Good training for these hilly races

The segment on Strava called "Suikerbosrand / Scorpion rd climb" is 11.9Km with an average gradient of 2% compared to Fox Hill (2%). However the initial gradient is less steep at the reserve, and the last bit is steeper. Elevation difference is 310m vs 331m

Folks, stop worrying about Fox hill, really. It's a non-issue. I repeat, it's a gradual, gentle climb and only kicks up a bit at the end. Yes it does hurt in the racing bunches because of the speed the okes go up, but for everyone else going up at their own pace it's a doddle. What you should be more concerned about is the section starting from Inchanga and ending with the last climb on the M13 (before you drop down Fields Hill). That's where The Man With The Hammer lives - you'll get to meet him there.

Me worried?  :w00t:

First time I'm riding it, and not chasing the wheel(s) in front of me. Will be nice to see the scenery and not white spots...

Best way to do it :). I'm actually seriously toying with the idea of quitting racing after 94.7 and just doing events socially next year.
