Strava shows 1559m

Garmin Connect shows 1523m

The elevation correction is enabled on my GC profile, so I'm sure the elevation above is realistic.

my Garmin only showed 1068m of elevation gain & the official profile shows 1160m.

Come on guys and gals. All you need to measure elevation gain is your legs and lungs. If you need techno gadgets to tell you is was precisely 8848m ascent then there is no hope.

Oooooi I wasnt asking for precisely...also it will be nice to know how different elevations 'feel', especially if one is not used to it. So next time there is a 100km race with say 1200km elevation I might be able to know how much harder I can push or not.

There is a difference between 1000m and 1500m for sure and according to official data this race should just have been over 1000m, but for me it certainly felt worse than other events with 'officially' the same amount.

So just hearing/asking for 'future guidance'.

Actually all we need is to check the PPA site run by those okes down in the Cape to tell us that the course is an easy 1.03 beta...  :whistling:

so according to elevation and index. which is more difficult. argus. amashova. 947?

Tricky one. Based on ascent perceived or captured (in order of descending difficulty)

1. Argus

2. Amashova

3. 947

Based on the beta index's I have ever seen on the PPA site

1. 947

2. Amashova

3. Argus

For me personally

1. Argus

2. Amashova

3. 947

For me the 94 is the hardest of the three. In fairness I haven't done the Argus in years so my memory could be fooling me. I found the Argus the easiest. The problem in JHB isn't the crap air. We get winds this type of year no hanging pollution but the air is very thin. Altitude is a big deal.

Shova is my favorite.

For me, hardest to easiest would be:

947 (2014)

Shova (2014/15)

Argus (2007/8)

That's my perception - I've only ever done the Argus in favourable weather conditions. There's lots of time to recover on the Argus compared to the 947. The Amashova fits in between these two as the climbing is a bit longer, but then the descents are also longer.

Interesting. my perception is the same as the ppa index. it's a pity tthe distance is not the same. as my time are in reverse order.

947

The pace was definitely hotter this year than last.

Even taking into account that this years finish was a little shorter (about 1 - 2 min), here are some comparisons.

Haig Gibb did a 2:44 last year and then a 2:34 this year.

The top 3 in 'A' last year did a 2:47 (all elites). This year the front guys in 'A' besides Haig (almost all of them elites as well) finished in 2:37 with us in the chase group still coming in 3 min faster than last years winner.

This year the winner of VA finished in 2:34. Last year VA's were 8 minutes slower at 2:42.

And with the heat and the head wind, the conditions for me were definitely more difficult than last year.

I thought the pace was extreme going out of Maritzburg!

Ex PTA Quentin Gordon was also part of that group

After reading how well everyone did on this thread...i think i am gona rather go back to fishing ;) ... anyone looking for a 2015 anthem and trek road bike...just kidding.

the scary part was the guys riding the yellow single speed bikes were overtaking me...yiiiikes...i told myself if  one of those ice cream bicycles over take me thats it i am gona pull over and wait for the recovery vehicle.

Time to rest...then pull my finger out my butt and start riding longer distances and training harder.
