Pivot bearing noise

OK the noise is back and its bad.

I had a look at the old pivot bearings which were replaced, this one stands out, these are scuff marks, I am thinking this could be the problem, I think the bearing metal case rubs when applying pedaling pressure and the pressure is side to side, It is the typical Metal on Carbon sound, I would think the bike frame would be better made with an alloy shins where metal joins the frame.

any experience with this.

Definitely looks like a problem and a potential source for noise, not to mention frame wear which is not ideal.

I think the loctite/bearing fit would be the only option tbh. I know Santa Cruz recommend loctite 680 for main pivot bearings for the Heckler (it comes with the bearing replacement kit). My old Commencal Meta 5.5 frame also recommended loctite 641 for the main pivot bearings.

So I would check to see if the loctite 680 or 641 are compatible with carbon and at least try this route. Otherwise the only option I can see is some sort of shim (which will be a very difficult exercise) or a new frame.

Yo Sid

My Rocky sometimes has an issue with the lower pivots making a creaking noise .... usually after a wash.

What I eventually figured out was that it was either dirt or some other evil debris getting in there .... a quick squirt of either chain lube or something like Q20 sorts the problem out for a couple of bike washes.

Does one grease the bearings between a carbon frame the new bearing, use locktite, or just insert the new bearing as is?

Go in dry, if you want creaking then grease it up .

Cool. Thanks..........so if it does creak, you use the locktite as a possible solution? Would you be able to get that bearing out again without damaging your carbon frame, if you used locktite?

No locktite, ever.

It creaks because the bearing is either toast or the frame has some oxidation that built up thanks to moisture .

I had a similar problem with road bike. It clicked like a freaking metronome every time the left crank passed the 5 o'clock position. It Drove me totally bonkers, so I know you feel.

It was only prevalent under high power, particularly when climbing. The noise was there while both sitting and standing, but hugely amplified with my significant ass in situ.

The lbs could not locate the source, it went in many times for the same recurring problem. They swopped out pedals, wheels, saddle, tightened this and that, but the noise stayed.

After excluding every other possible cause they tried the loctite solution, which worked for all of 60km before the noise was back like a festering septic audible sore.

Eventually they replaced the BB cups, which seems to have worked. The bike is mostly silent, but the noise still comes back occasionally mostly near the the end of a long ride. Once the bike is washed it disappears, so my (ludicrous) theory is that the noise is the result of sweat and 32Gi mixture dripping on to the cups.

I should mention that I am a serial cross chainer, which I think is the real cause of the mad wear on the bb cups. Of course, what I think has no value, because I do not know which way to turn a screwdriver.

Anyway, here is a pic of my old BB cup - the wear seems to bear a striking resemblance to your bearing.

I am thinking that greasing a pivot area is not a good idea, grease is a lubricant designed to encourage movement, you don't want movement between a bearing and its seating, I going to try loctite removable and see how it goes.

Make sure it is VERY removable.... removing the bearing might well be an issue after this - rather try with a dry bearing and mount surface first - you could try meths to clean ithe surfaces first.

It was an issue removing the existing bearings. It will almost be impossible to remove them if they were installed with locktite

I can't even begin to count how many bearings I have taken out of things, and never a trace of Locktite
