I think of entering it for the first time, doing the shorter 45km route.

I should be fine if I start putting in serious time in the saddle now?

What type of base are you working off?

I rode the 45km as my very first MTB race ever in Jozi almost 7yrs ago.  I did a few Northern farm rides and thought I waas ready for the 45km.  I got totally OWNED!

The 45km is NOT easy, but doable, 3 of the key climbs of the day is in the first 32km for all riders, so just come prepared.

Hated it last year, longest day in the saddle. I prefer to ride attakwas, then turn around and ride it back.

Nevermind, I entered for the 80km again this year. Putting in some IDT time, and hopefully it wont catch me by suprise... again....

I am doing about 8hrs per week on the bike. I want to step it up to about 15hrs in 2 wks time. Also want to go out to wolwespruit and tackle those hills, so that I am prepared for the hills.

I have done a couple of 45km races with mountains etc, but I do not want to underestimate the monster

Focus on high intensity training, which is effective to build your endurance and strength in a short time. Also, try to train on terrain that will be similar to race conditions. Training on the road doesn't prepare your body for the rigors of a long day out in the mountains. Wolwespruit is a good place to train. Start doing laps there.

Many thanks, I appreciate it.

Just a pity wolwespruit so short and need to do a lot of laps to get some distance.

True. Can't it be linked up to other venues in the area?

I've done one and it broke me.

This year, I'm older, wiser(?) and with any luck, a little fitter. See you for a really tough but enjoyable 80km peeps.

Unless they have a batched start I am afraid they won't be seeing my money again. Last year was an absolute dog show.

No batched start?! So everyone just crammed into the chute like sardines and went for it at the starting gun?

Yes on the fist corner people were off and pushing last year, it was highly frustrating
